Why I Want to Major in Psychology at The College of Arts and Sciences

 I had always found myself being drawn to people, being interested in their behaviors and actions. Like why we get embarrassed when our eyes meet a stranger's eye or why some have different ranges of anger. I have always enjoyed giving advice to people, listening to others and helping them solve their issues and problems. With obtaining the psychology degree, I believe I will be able to see events through a different lens. People study psychology to understand why people behave the way they do, but I really want to study psychology to understand myself. Psychology is the key to the world of understanding a person’s mind. I believe it is an art and not just science. Just like art, you can apply the applications learned in psychology to your own life.

I want to major in Psychology at the College of Arts and Sciences because it is located in the heart of New York City where the culture of the city and the teachings of NYU come together. Not only does NYU have the best academic foundation, but it also provides a place to conduct fieldwork that not many schools can match. From the WINS program to the Golden Rose Ceremony. The unique freshman First Year Seminars and Cohort meetings Leadership will prepare me for my goal of interning at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, by providing me with one-of-a-kind exposure to communication, research, and analysis.

The department of psychology offers a concentration in areas such as clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and personality psychology. Personally, I am really interested in cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive neuroscience covers the anatomical and behavioral parts of psychology which makes it a better combination and learning experience. In addition to the wonderful professors, The department also hosts events and have speakers who cover various topics of psychology and how it is applied. I think the seminars, events, and activities will help me explore the field of psychology from a different perspective. The events provided help me connect with not only the people at NYU but also in New York City like the Neuroscience Outreach group at NYU, NeuWrite or seminars on Neurophilosophy.

I will love to contribute to the events that are hosted by Nyu since I am always interested in interacting with diverse people and growing my knowledge. And I think that these events will help me better communicate with people. I think with the help of NYU I will finally be able to understand myself and those who are around me.
