My decision to study medicine stems from neither a life-changing event nor is it a childhood ambition. It is, rather a product of in-depth research and first-hand experience.
Shadowing a pediatric intensivist allowed me to witness and observe several high-pressure situations, from the administration of central lines to intubations. Being surrounded by healthcare professionals who indulged every question of mine, nurtured my interest in medicine. Due to this experience, I understood the imperative role interpersonal skills play in healthcare. The ability to inspire trust in both the confused children and the worried parents was critical in the success of these procedures. Furthermore, I realised that the medical profession is intrinsically intertwined. The highest level of care can be administered, only when there is an exchange of ideas and unique perspectives among all members of the team, rather than an idea stemming from the knowledge of a single individual, regardless of experience in the field.
My experience as an online summer volunteer at an NGO was an exercise that tested my ability to communicate effectively, adapt to new variables and work as a team player. I worked to raise funds by contacting several individuals and organisations to aid migrant labourers adversely affected by the pandemic.
The values of empathy and accountability were reinforced as a volunteer at a camp for teenagers with special needs. I assisted in food prep, and several activities to both entertain the campers, as well as, improve dexterity in those with physical disabilities. It was not always easy, and I recognised the impact of disabilities and the associated stigma on daily activities. It was a rewarding experience that taught me to appreciate our differences and similarities.
Although these instances played an important role, the most significant contributing factor in my decision to study medicine comes from my academic pursuits. As a student, I have developed a great interest in the sciences. The study of psychology, particularly the abnormal and health psychology modules, underpinned the role of individual neurological patterns in disease and treatment. Furthermore, the study of Global Perspectives and Research gave me opportunities to carry out several research projects on topics such as “access to reproductive healthcare and development”, “ ethics of physician-assisted dying” and “healthcare disparities among LGBTQ youths ”. As a result, I am adept at carefully considering both sides of the argument and its consequences before drawing an objective conclusion.
I maintain that medicine in the UK is the best fit for me due to its emphasis on patient-oriented learning, research opportunities and early contact with patients which allows for, greater practical experience and comprehensive understanding of the medical field.
Outside academics, I am the captain of the school throwball team. The sport gives me a physical outlet for negative emotions. As captain, I am better able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of my peers and devise strategies that give us the best chance to succeed. Additionally, I have taken part in several debates and MUN’s granting me a greater awareness of current affairs. I also partake in dance and yoga to practice mindfulness and remain balanced.
I acknowledge that the profession is demanding on both physical and mental resources. However, it is a career that indulges my passion for science and allows me to establish meaningful relationships with people, rooted in mutual understanding and respect. Through my experiences, I was able to discern that an ‘ideal’ doctor is one who is dedicated, empathetic, calm in the face of pressure and has a continued will to learn. I am confident in my ability to grow as an individual and embody these qualities through intense, sustained hard work.
