Why I Wish to Be a Part of Uchicago Family: My Academic Interests

My sister often comes home struggling with the workload and the overall challenging academics at her dream school, UChicago, but each and every time I watch her put in her utmost effort to overcome any obstacle she face at school. In all her protestations I see a passion that is missing from most university students that I have encountered; I notice a motivation, a want to make an impact on the world, and a sense of gratefulness that shines through in all the things she does, something that UChicago has instilled in her, something that long for in my future institution and am willing to work for. So why UChicago? In this essay I explain what attracts me to this university and why I want to be a part of it.

Inspired by her, and curious as to what makes University of Chicago so special, I came across the works of Jean Decety and all his genius, a process which led me familiarising myself with the university. Little did I know that after this little quest to seek more about UChicago was over, it would go from being a place unknown to a place of my dreams. I love asking questions, I look for the what and the why, and if it were not for the science of Psychology, so many questions about the human mind would go unanswered. Every day I see and understand aspects of human behavior from my psychology textbook, I critically analyze the works of Freud and Watson, I am captivated by the theories of Skinner, but I want to ask bigger questions, and push myself to learn and embark on intellectual journeys. The curiosity of UChicago’s students and the effort put into building a progressive and thoughtful community is reflected through its academic program. The vast amount research opportunities provided by the university, coupled with the courses offered by the psychology department will not only pave a path for me to nurture my inquisitive mind by providing an advanced understanding of my particular interests related to my major, but also hone my communication skills via the interactions with faculty members and advisors that are committed to contributing to the cutting-edge research the university offers.

I believe psychology focuses on the individual, on social relationships, and biological systems, it connects to our application of knowledge and our understanding of events, it improves education and employment- influencing every aspect of our lives. The Core Curriculum at UChicago similarly relates to every discipline. Such a program not only helps students have a grasp on any field they want to venture into, but it enables them to utilize these skills to any problem put forth because knowledge is power, after all.

Finaly, why UChicago? I wish to be part of the UChicago family. The discussions, the passion, the diversity- added together, complement not only my diverse likings and yearning to explore the world that surrounds me but also obtain a holistic and esteemed education. I want to evolve, to climb to greater heights, and seek higher learning, and there is no better place to do so than UChicago.
