Philippine news media is a powerful tool that is used by different organizations to connect, inform, and influence its subscribed audiences. Although this has plenty of potential for its users, it is often used to convey biased information to persuade its audiences to a stance. This is a critical essay on the research paper entitled: “The Political Affiliations and Biases of the Philippine News Media” which talks about the different aspects of influence pertaining to political subterfuge in the Philippines. While it is a paper with good intentions to inform its audiences, it seems that it may lack in execution, especially in terms of breadth and depth. The goal of this paper is to identify these irregularities, as well as to provide a probable solution to make the evaluated paper better in terms of the said deficiency.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

The discussion about the introduction to biased media and the state of media in the Philippine context was well executed with accurate supports from different credible sources. It showed multiple perspectives to further the concept of what media is supposed to be as a corporeal foundation for the readers to revolve around. The paper also mentioned instances where Philippine news media was biased in both past and the present timelines, thereby showing the prevalence of the issue as it continues to be timely and timeless; However, the author failed to elaborate on certain points throughout the essay about biased media to support his position about the said issue.

One instance of failed elaboration was giving significant information to enrich and deepen the argumentation. Although the author made it a point to broach the structural augmentation of Philippine media along with biases on political issues, some of the points deviate from what the author aspired to illustrate. By heavily accentuating on certain stations such as ABS-CBN and The Philippine Daily Inquirer to encompass the reality of Philippine media, the author failed to show that other news and TV companies mentioned in the paper were also biased in producing impartial disseminated outputs for its accounted audiences. Giving multiple sides to support his claim may lessen the inaccurate portrayal of the Philippine media because, subjected to the author’s own biases, the focus delved through convoluting his stance by throwing different opinions about the deliberated issue that are mostly insignificant to the overall argument.

On the other hand, another inconsistency was showing the complexities of the problem. The author failed to show different factors such as the roots and its implications of the said issue, only managing to discuss the topic at the surface level by giving examples which supported his claim. In addition to this, the author also did not present any real solution to the preceded and prevalent problem leaving the readers altruistically open-handed and asking “so what?” after reading the paper. Given this, the author seemed to only touch upon that it is a problem and proved that it was through procuring evidences. Even though the objective of the paper was to inform, no insinuations of what may happen when medias today are biased were stated from the author showing no gravity of the problem at hand.

One plausible way to give depth to the argument may be supplying a solution to the problem. Media is a powerful tool that organizations often abuse and it is true that no sources can be completely free from biases. To disseminate, react, and connect are probable solutions that can promote being unbiased at the end of the readers (Manzi). Apart from these, one should manifest a discerning mind because it only takes a fair and just mind to be able to do so (Akers). It is important to learn the ability to decipher constructed and biased information from reality itself and exercise control and freedom over the media one sees every day to be truly liberated from biases.

In conclusion, the author seemed to fail in delivering elaborate and concise illustrations of biased media that were both clear and encompassing. The evident lack of different aspects of the problem to deepen the argument and interconnections to the said issue diminishes the quality of understanding for its readers predominantly in the aspect of what the author wants to employ to its audience. It is possible that equally representing and providing a solution are two of the best ways to address these problems. Despite mentioning these inconsistencies in the paper, the writer’s bias and lapses may be recognized since the critical essay writer is a patron of media. On the whole, the readers have equivalent responsibilities as the writers. Responsible reading, which is not just to accept information abruptly, is highly encourage to readers in order to lessen ones susceptibility to biased information.
