I am a student at Washington High School. My life goal is to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Bioscience, which consists of classes such as biology, chemistry, human genetics, and physics. I selected this major because it provides the necessary classes to apply to an optometry school or fulfill the pre-requisites. I plan to attend Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and then transfer to KU Edwards Campus through the Degree in 3 program. After obtaining my Bachelor’s degree, I plan to attend the School of Optometry at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where I will earn my Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree.
My educational goal is to learn as much information as possible from whoever is willing to share it. On the other hand, my career vision is to one day provide affordable health care and give back to communities in the United States. I am applying for this scholarship because it would help lessen the impact of rising tuition costs and student loans, allowing me more time to focus on my studies instead of working. This would reduce my risk of dropping out and not obtaining the degree I desire. I should be chosen for this scholarship because I am a hardworking student, and I am committed to fully taking advantage of the opportunity it will provide me. I am also persistent. While there may be other worthy candidates who deserve the award as much as I do, my work ethic and past accomplishments are strong indicators of my future success.
My hard work paid off during my sophomore year in high school when I was selected as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. During my junior year, I was recognized on the superintendent's honor roll for my school district. Additionally, when I completed a summer internship at KUMC and presented my research, I was given the opportunity to present my project again at the Heartland Undergraduate Biochemistry (HBU) conference. These experiences not only reinforced my commitment to my educational and career goals but also strengthened my belief in the importance of making a meaningful impact.
Making an impact is important to me. As Nelson Mandela once said, “As I have said, the first thing is, to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself… Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility” (Mandela, 1995). Another quote by Anthony S. Fauci states, “I believe I have a personal responsibility to make a positive impact on society” (Fauci, 2020). These quotes have inspired me to be more involved in society. Engaging in community service has made me more aware of the world around me, and I have gained self-esteem and confidence in myself. I also hope to make a favorable impact on society by giving back to the community I come from. It is always good to realize that even completing trivial things to help others can have an enormous impact. I take pleasure in helping people, and there is nothing compared to the joy I feel knowing that I helped someone become happy.
In conclusion, my educational and career goals are driven by a desire to learn and make a positive impact on society. I am committed to working hard and taking advantage of opportunities that come my way, including the scholarship I am applying for. With determination and persistence, I am confident that I will achieve my goals and contribute meaningfully to the field of optometry and the communities I serve.
