In the short story A Pair of Silk Stockings by Kate Chopin, a young mother comes into possession of fifteen dollars. rs.Sommers at first thinks she should spend the money on her children, but her priorities change after she feels a pair of silk stockings.
Mrs.Sommers changes from a self-sacrificing provider for her family to a person out of touch with reality. Mrs.Sommers would give up things that she wanted in order to provide the best for her children, she lost sleep and forgot lunch when she was preparing for the big shopping day. For example, the night before Mrs.Sommers went shopping she stayed up all night planning how to spend the money, But it was during the still hours of the night when she lay awake revolving plans in her mind that she seemed to see her way apply towards proper and judicious use of the money. This shows that she was overly concerned about how the money was spent. This also shows that she could not stop thinking about how she could spend the money. In addition, Mrs.Sommers mind was so worried about what to buy that she completely forgot about lunch, between getting the children fed and the place righted, and preparing herself for the shopping bout, she had actually forgotten to eat any luncheon at all. This shows that she was in such a hurry to get shopping that she forgot about anything else. This also shows how Mrs.Sommers was willing to sacrifice in order to get the best for her family. In conclusion, Mrs.Sommers was an excellent mother, but soon all that would change.
Although Mrs.Sommers was an excellent mother she lost touch with reality once she touched a pair of silk stockings. For example, Mrs.Sommers saw the silk stockings as a incredibly valuable item She smiled, just as if she had been asked to inspect a tiara of diamonds with the ultimate view of purchasing it. This shows that Mrs.Sommers thought the stockings might be too good for her, since most of us would not consider wearing a diamond tiara. This also shows Mrs.Sommers fell in love with the stockings on sight, and had already made the decision to purchase them. In addition, Mrs.Sommers started to spend her money on things she really could not afford such as lunch in an expensive restaurant and a tip for the waiter The price of it made no difference. She counted the money out to the waiter and left an extra coin on his tray, whereupon, he bowed before her as before as before a princess of royal blood. This shows that by the end of her shopping trip Mrs.Sommers was spending money as if it did not matter. This also shows that with all her purchases Mrs.Sommers was beginning to feel as if she was something that she was not. In conclusion, Mrs.Sommers totally forgot who she was and what she was supposed to be doing once she touch the pair of silk stockings. In conclusion, by the end of the story Mrs.Sommers had changed her priorities completely. She went from a conservative mother to a free spending princess.
Whatever happened, Mrs.Sommers was a completely different person at the end of the story than she was at the beginning
