Immigration has become one of the most sort after, as well as contentious issues in the United States of America (Koppelman, 2016). It has been debated widely by the US citizens, politicians and the government at large. It has become an issue of concern to the US government. Although many immigrants join the country in the past, but also there is new immigrant in the country. This has brought significant changes in the social, economic, political, as well as culture in the country. As a result, there emerged a popular and famous theory which suggested that children from immigration families performed better in school from their counterpart the native-born and raised Americans.

According to the research carried out by Richard Rothstein, the myth that was held by most Americans was that they believed that children, as well as grandchildren of European immigrants in the country, used to perform well in school. Also, the native children also made it in academics. This was because many schools viewed their responsibility to be that of an integrating agent, rejection, segregate, as well as failure which is linked with immigration, has resulted in abandonment. Also, the US history is popularly known by slavery, as well as conquest. The descendants of the immigrants went through political, as well as economic oppression. The immigrants were also degrading their culture, as well as language in schools (Campbell, 2016).

Yes, this is because this myth has been branded another name “immigrant paradox.” This is because these children have been perceived to have the capacity and ability which leads to upward mobility. There is also a popular belief among Americans in which they believe that something subpar concerning Americans culture and tradition that becomes a barrier to children from native parents from performing well in schools. This myth persisted since there were desire and motivation for our country to be in the leading position in academics and research. Our nation was great and awesome, the school curriculum and the system were working perfectly well. Therefore, it motivated the first generation immigrant to work hard and perform well.

But according to the research that was conducted by professor Feliciano, a sociologist, he discovered that what made or enabled immigrant families to be more successful was connected to their upward mobility, but it was connected to their capacity to maneuver their ways just like the way they succeeded while in their native land. This was contributed mainly by the education that the parents of these children received while in their native country (Campbell, 2016). Also, these kids were motivated to work extra hard to be like their parents since they sew their parents as role models whom they can look up to for extra motivation. The myth continues to exist since many immigrant children compete to prove their worth compared to the native children. The challenges that these children go through makes them strong, and they become ready to sacrifice for the betterment of their lives.

This is a type of education which is purposed to enable students from diverse background to have equal opportunity for learning. These children come from a different background including race, cultural context, as well as social class (Nieto, 2009). Despite the diversity that exists among children, the should be given equal opportunity to learn and interact with one another. An inclusive learning approach should be encouraged. The use of multicultural education involves an approach to teaching, as well as learning which is centered on democratic values which support diversity in the interdependent world. Multicultural education is essential in that it encourages children to have a deeper understanding of the similarities together differences in the different cultural background they come from. This will help them to appreciate one another and the existence of various cultures around them. This will enable children to learn from one another about, traditional food, songs, and dances, attire, as well as cultural beliefs. Therefore, by doing this, not only will the children learn diverse culture but they will also learn and appreciate the curriculum.

The use of multicultural education also helps to make a lesson to be entertaining and enjoyable. Thus, it attracts the attention of children and encourages maximum learning to take place. It also breaks the monotony in the class when teachers facilitate teaching and learning. Therefore, multicultural education helps in enhancing the knowledge, as well as the awareness of the children to facilitate their understanding of the world better, as well as become more familiar with their environment.

Grade repetition is one of the policies that can hinder the immigrant children from performing, well as well developing an academic ladder. Since many immigrant children are associated with low socioeconomic status, most of them find themselves trailing in class as a result of inadequate educational materials at their disposal when compared with children from higher social class (Nieto 2009). Therefore, most of the imki9grant students find a lot of difficulty in catching up with the rest of native children as a result of slow adaptability to the new surroundings. Therefore, most of them find themselves repeating a grade as a result of poor performance. This is costly to the school management, as well as to the economy overall.

Another policy that the government implemented was tracking. This policy has more potential to affect immigrant students in their pursuit of quality education as they progress during teaching and learning in school. When tracking is carried out during the early period of learning in students, as well as vocational programs, this has the potential to cause inequality in the systems of the schools thus, causing children from the disadvantaged families to finish in lower tracks. Therefore, since many immigrants are financially challenged, their children are more likely to be affected by tracking.

Conclusion

Encouraging diversity among young children is significant. This is because it enables children to developmentally, socially, as well as to appreciate the different culture. It also allows them to recognize and value their families, diverse communities, and the world at large. Diversity also brings the aspects of differences, unfamiliarity, as well as experience that is beyond their immediate surrounding. Therefore, children are challenged to think beyond their individuality and immediate surrounding. Thus, multicultural education is a continuous type of knowledge that we should embrace in our day to day life activities (Nieto, 2009).
