Texting and driving refer to the practice of sending or reading text messages while operating a vehicle. This dangerous behavior has become increasingly prevalent, especially among young drivers, and has been shown to have severe consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than driving while intoxicated. In this proposal essay, I will discuss the dangers of texting while driving, the existing laws on this behavior, and propose a solution to address this issue.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Problem Statement

Texting while driving has serious consequences, including loss of life, injury, and property damage. The NHTSA reports that in 2019, 3,142 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers, and an estimated 424,000 people were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. The severity of injuries caused by texting while driving is also significant, with accidents often resulting in permanent disabilities or disfigurement.

Existing Laws on Texting and Driving

Currently, 48 states in the U.S. have laws prohibiting texting while driving. However, the specifics of these laws vary widely between states, with some only banning texting for certain groups of drivers, such as novice drivers, school bus drivers, or commercial drivers. The effectiveness of these laws has been called into question, with some arguing that they are difficult to enforce and do not serve as a sufficient deterrent.

Proposed Solution

To address the issue of texting and driving, I propose a three-pronged approach. First, there should be stricter laws prohibiting the use of handheld devices while driving, with harsher penalties for offenders. Second, there should be education and awareness campaigns aimed at educating drivers about the dangers of texting while driving and highlighting the importance of safe driving practices. Finally, there should be the implementation of technology to prevent texting while driving, such as apps that disable texting while a vehicle is in motion.

Benefits of the Proposed Solution

The proposed solution has several benefits. Stricter laws and harsher penalties should serve as a deterrent and reduce the number of accidents caused by texting while driving. Education and awareness campaigns can help to change societal norms and increase public awareness about the dangers of texting while driving. Finally, the implementation of technology to prevent texting while driving can improve road safety and prevent accidents.

Counterarguments and Rebuttal

One common counterargument to stricter laws on texting and driving is that they may be inconvenient for drivers, especially those who rely on their phones for work or communication. Additionally, some argue that the cost of implementing technology to prevent texting while driving may be too high.

While inconvenience and cost are valid concerns, safety should always be the priority. The inconvenience of not being able to use a phone while driving is negligible compared to the potential loss of life or injury caused by texting while driving. Additionally, while the initial cost of implementing technology may be high, the long-term cost savings from reduced accidents and injuries will outweigh these costs.
