A Walk to Remember is a successful novel for those who are searching for the romantic taste of love in high school. The story, narrated by a fifty-seven-year-old man, recounts his life during high school. It reminds me of my own high school experience, managing relationships with friends and family. In this essay, I will compare the protagonists with myself to highlight the similarities and differences between us.
Landon Carter is the protagonist of A Walk to Remember. Initially, Landon is a popular student with no clear plans for the future. One day, he pranks his friend, which goes awry and results in the boy being hospitalized. This incident reminds me of my own high school experience. I was playing around the pool with my friends when a group of troublesome seniors attacked us. They pushed me into the deep end of the pool. My eyes shut, and my limbs felt paralyzed. This experience left me terrified of pools, a fear that lingers to this day.
After Landon's prank, he is punished by participating in various after-school activities. This leads him to interact with Jamie, whom he has known since childhood. Initially, Landon dismisses Jamie as not his type because she is nerdy and old-fashioned. However, he gradually becomes close to Jamie and falls in love with her involuntarily. In high school, I was a nerdy boy, quite the opposite of Landon. I avoided school activities, thinking they were dull. However, one of my friends insisted I join in. Although initially uncomfortable, I realized it wasn't a bad idea to try something new. I always thought of him as annoying, but spending more time together revealed him to be a kind person who helped me step out of my comfort zone.
Their friendship grows day by day, transforming from strangers to close friends, and eventually into a couple. Landon and Jamie fall in love. However, Jamie reveals she has terminal leukemia and has stopped responding to treatments. She tells Landon she has limited time left, and he does everything to fulfill her wishes. In my case, I mustered the courage to ask my friend to be my boyfriend, but the response was different from the novel. He told me that since we were both men, it was impossible for us to love each other. I consoled myself, remembering that chapter of my life. After that, we never saw each other again.
In summary, for better or worse, relationships are not always like those in novels. The beginning and middle might mirror a story, but the end can be unpredictable. It might have a happy ending, or it might not, as in my case. Everyone knows that love comes with its share of pain, especially when loving someone who doesn't reciprocate. Remember to love yourself, and I hope you all find someone who loves you as deeply as Jamie and Landon did.
