This reading taught me that we cannot grow only organic food in order to feed the world. Only organic food uses no pesticides whatsoever to aid in growth and pest removal, therefore there is a higher chance of the crop failing or being devoured by pests throughout the season. As a result of pests destroying the crops the yield is made lower, therefore the farmer gains less of a profit for that season. When growing large amounts of a single crop pesticides are typically used to aid in pest removal to gain a higher rate of crop gain rather than loss. If there is a lower yield for the season that means less people can gain access to the crops, so no, exclusively organic farming cannot feed the world.
I also learned that if we grow with pesticides and chemicals it could lead to higher yields and cut down GHG(greenhouse gases)emissions. Reducing the emittance of greenhouse gases will help reduce the carbon footprint we have left on the world. Although in order to keep crops growing at the same rate and collection rate per harvest farmers will need to be constantly changing and manipulating the chemicals used in their fields. Farmers will also need to find a way to harvest their fields without using machines that eat up fossil fuels, causing the rest of the world to be in a shortage and thus eating up our nonrenewable resources. Exclusively growing crops using chemical inputs is not a valid way to feed the world either, because the chemical intake on the body harms the consumer and therefore is not a reasonable way to feed the world.
The final thing this reading has taught me is that organic farming, although healthier and becoming more popular throughout the us is not always the best solution when it comes to mass producing crops. Some areas are still left without food, even in large farming areas. This shortage is a result of taxpayer subsidized crops as well as the seasonal yield for each farm. If one far does better than another then they will gain a higher revenue as well as having more crops to spare and sell. On the other hand if a farm has a bad season then the farm will be at a loss for revenue and monetary income. Feeding the world this way would be unreliable.
