The movie entitled Alone/Together is a team-up of Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano in the big screen revolving around the third person point of view. It was a story of failure and redemption that gave chills and heartbreak to the viewers. Also, what made this movie a ‘’must watch film’’ is because of promoting our cultures and heritage as Filipinos from the story itself up to the opm songs that signifies how the director loves and honored her nationality.
The narrative of the film takes place several years starting when Raf, a realist man and Christine, as an idealist woman were still UST and UP students respectively. This film tackled whether Christine would change the world or the world will change her. However, considering how things ended for them, the two reconnected with the hopes that they may still have a future together. “We must never forget”, are the words that Christine, a museum guide, always tells to her visitors while talking about Spoliarium. From preaching about the lessons of history, she also delve into pop culture telling that the painting also served as an inspiration to Eraserheads as they composed their song which is entitled, “Spolarium”.
The scene started to become a comedy at first glance when Raf entered as he interrupted Christine about him justifying that the song is entitled same as Juan Luna’s masterpiece. Argued at first, prompting a romance that spans from when they were just dreamers in college years up to when the realities of life pressured them to compromise. The two lovers were obviously different in viewing the world but same in envisioning that they would get to spend the rest of their lives together. Raf is just a typical pre-med student back then who just want to pass in his subjects unlike Christine who is achiever and very eager to graduate with Latin Honor and be a successful museum art director telling stories about the beauty of Filipino cultures, to specifically change the world. But a slew of complications force them to doubt if their love is even worth going through some circumstances.
Five years after a painful break-up, the two are reunited coincidentally. Both of them have already with somebody else. Raf as a license doctor and Christine redirected as a secretary of her fiance who saved her from her controversy. Tin’s sorrow over her wasted life and failures is something a lot of millennials can relate to.
The film chronicles the romance through success and failures, extending the scene into pop and history, the relevance and escape towards conflict of love, of art and also entertainment. The opening of the movie is like planting seeds of so many themes and interests that prescribes political color but will take you to the deeper flow of the story itself.
For the span of two hours, the film gives us a glimpse on Tin and Raf’s innocence and idealism and how five years can drastically change their individual trajectories. In a film where the changes are very crucial, it seems that the story for the two main characters were not that balance. It is primarily promoted a love story, however, its romantic angle takes a back seat in the bigger scheme of things. The film seems to mainly focused on Tin with almost everything shown from her perspective. On the other hand, Raf on his own has no backstory, not even a family.
Apart from it, hands down to the director with her selling points or having the ability to dig deep into the mess of human emotions and the consequences that comes with the hard choices that we have to make to move on to the next stage in our lives. For the span of two hours, the film gives us a glimpse on Tin and Raf’s innocence and idealism and how five years can drastically change their individual trajectories. Going back, I wanted to see more on the maturity of their love story because I just saw the ‘’young love’’ trope. It could have been so much to explore. I wish I knew more about the story of Raf and why he was that attached to Tin.
Apart from it, I also wanted to see more flesh about the romance of Raf and Aly had and why does it easy for Raf to give it up for his great love. I just wanted to see what happened to him after his first breakdown when Tin broke up with him and why he chose to be great. Maybe he struggled also to turn his life around without his inspiration. I also wanted to give highlights to Christine’s mother. The movie certainly showed how mother’s love cannot compare to anyone else in this world.
Truly that a mother knows what her children are going through. Relating to that, I wanted them to discuss more about the difference of great and right love. Actually, there was a scene that tackled this when they were in New York after the calm conversation but then it would be best if they will lay their cards. It somehow happened in the latter part and I loved how sincere and subtly they did it. The heartbreaking lines from the movie was a fresh take that were perfectly rooted in reality. Something that the audiences were looking for.
“Alone/Together” is a great film not because of the big star casts but because of its simplicity and eye-opener story as it delve much more on the situations of people in today’s time . No any gimmicks or ridiculous plot twist happened. The journey of the main characters were relatable at all levels, especially for those millennials who were trying to build their own path and who suddenly find themselves thrown into the real world.
