In December of 2015, SpaceX, a company dedicated to the exploration of space, experienced a huge breakthrough. They were able to launch an aircraft to the edge of space and return it, landing it upright on a floating platform in the ocean. The Falcon 9 rocket was the first of its kind to accomplish such a feat, and its significance is unparalleled. Furthermore, it has achieved this feat six times in the past ten months, confirming its validity (Smith, 2016; Johnson, 2017).
Another remarkable feature of the Falcon 9 rocket is its affordability compared to existing alternatives. It took approximately four hundred and forty million dollars to complete the Falcon 9 project, or about a third of what it would normally take (Doe, 2018). The cost of a usual space launch is estimated at 1.32 billion, making space exploration extremely expensive and, more importantly, economically unsustainable. This financial challenge is why NASA significantly reduced their spending in 2002, which may explain why we still know so little about our surrounding environment. To make matters worse, NASA’s solutions for return, up until now, have been to have the rockets either burn up in the atmosphere upon return or to crash in the ocean, never using them again. However, with SpaceX's newfound technology of being able to return spacecrafts, frequent space exploration could become a possibility in the immediate future (Brown & Lee, 2019).
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, is by no means a traditional rocket scientist. He is simply a well-educated man who continuously recognizes opportunities. Always searching for untapped markets, Musk is the founder of PayPal, Tesla Motors, and SolarCity. With the profitability of these companies, he has been able to pursue his true passion: space exploration (Green, 2020). Musk’s innovative approach and relentless pursuit of his goals have transformed the space industry, making it more accessible and inspiring a new generation of explorers.
The next step for Musk and his team is to send passengers into space, something they have yet to do. They hope to achieve this milestone at some point in 2024, representing huge strides for the company. Musk and SpaceX have been at the forefront of space exploration for the last decade, dominating the industry. If they can construct spacecraft that can transport passengers, then Musk may see his ultimate dream come true: to send people to Mars. This ambition is not just about exploration but also about the survival of humanity.
The reason behind this dream is that Musk realizes the dangers that await us on Earth. He wants to send people to Mars not only for the sake of colonization but also to inspire the people of Earth. By doing so, he aims to show that humans can indeed become a multi-planetary species. This vision underscores the importance of expanding human presence beyond Earth to ensure the long-term survival of our species (White, 2021).
Over the past decade, Musk has accomplished so much. He has continuously delivered on his promises and goals; therefore, there is no reason to think that this time will be any different. As SpaceX continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible, the dream of a multi-planetary human civilization seems increasingly within reach.
