This article examines the culture of community-based after-school programs that serve incoming immigrant youth. The author argues that through collaboration, schools and community-based after-school programs may be able to bridge the academic and cultural gaps that marginalize low-income, immigrant youth (Francis, 2008). Education researchers in the field have extensively investigated the effects of after-school programs and how to incorporate them effectively.
Out-of-school-time (OST) programs can keep young people safe, support working families, and improve academic achievement and the civic and social development of young people. However, some critics emphasize the importance of implementing programs that foster communication, self-respect, and mutual respect to avoid at-risk behaviors, which are crucial to the well-being and success of youth. Students who are dealing with drug dependency, violence, and teenage pregnancy often face more challenges in excelling academically.
After-school programs should address the prevalent issues among young people today that predispose them to deviant and delinquent behaviors. Some examples of these major issues include the abstinence from drugs and alcohol, avoidance of delinquency, violence and gang activity, unsafe sex, precocious sexual activity, teen pregnancy, and coping with peer pressure. These programs should also provide mentorship opportunities to guide youth toward positive life choices and foster resilience against negative influences.
Thirty-two percent of ninth-grade participants took and passed the exam, compared to one percent of ninth-grade non-participants. Fifty-two percent of active participants took and passed the math sequential 2 and 3 exams, compared to 15 percent of non-participants in the same grade. Because young people spend only 20% of their time in school, how and where they spend the remaining 80% has significant implications for their well-being and future. Quality after-school programs provide exciting and compelling learning activities in a safe and supportive environment. These programs aim to ensure that students are happy, productive, and efficient.
After-school programs can meet students’ needs for personal attention from adults, involve them in positive peer groups that foster an environment of inclusion, and engage them in experiential activities that build self-esteem. Moreover, after-school programs are uniquely positioned to encourage a more supportive bridge between home and school. This non-profit organization supports after-school programs and works to expand experiences beyond the traditional day-school for kids. If one wants to build younger students' interest, it is crucial to connect with them to be an effective leader and role model. Additionally, these programs can play a vital role in nurturing future leaders by providing opportunities for leadership development and community involvement.
In conclusion, after-school programs play a vital role in addressing the academic and social challenges faced by immigrant and low-income youth. By offering a supportive environment and opportunities for personal growth, these programs can significantly contribute to the holistic development of young individuals. Collaborative efforts between schools and community-based organizations are essential in maximizing the potential benefits of after-school programs. Continued research and investment in these programs are necessary to ensure they meet the evolving needs of youth in today's society.
