The filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock was called the “Master of suspense”, because he used a kind of psychological tension in his films, creating a distinct viewing experience. For instance, the film Psycho, directed by him, was considered one of the most terrifying film of its time. Created in 1960, it was a classic and a great horror film for the norms it violated all films. 'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

There many recurring motifs in the film psycho, birds are the physical manifestation of these ideas. The film tells the story of Marion Crane (Janett Leigh) the main character, who disappears after stealing $5,000 from her employer. Another evidence is that there’s also many references to birds in conversation between characters, such as, when Marion is told by Norman that she “eats like a bird”. Norman also has a collection of birds in his parlour, the main one being an owl and a hawk. The continuous references to symbolize the life and appearance of predators and prey, predators is represented danger, killer and prey represents innocent, small. The metaphor of birds is represented of the different type of personalities of the characters and dangerous associating with events that are coming up. It is likely that Alfred Hitchcock uses motifs to emerge representation in Psycho.

Alfred Hitchcock even uses the motif mirrors, the mirrors were frequently seen throughout the film, and for example, when the mirror from the bathroom reflects on Marion’s assets. Perhaps the most obvious use of mirror was when Marion’s sister sees her reflection in different mirror and is shocked that she believes someone is behind her. Another evidence is when Marion enters bates motel offices, the camera was caught in her reflection before she even comes into the picture. We see Norman and Marion in the mirror together for a split second. This must mean that two characters had a guilty immoral side to them, or that the immoral half of Marion and Normans were some way entangled. In this case the fact is that Alfred Hitchcock effectively use meaning and dominant in demonstrate characterization.

Another motif that Alfred Hitchcock uses as a symbolic is the eyes when Norman watches Marion undress through the peephole in the wall, after removing a painting from the wall. There’s an intense close-up of his eyes, including us in his unsuitable secret. In this sequence, Norman’s eye’s see the same thing as we do as an audience. In the scene when Marion was brutally killed, it shown close to her lifeless eyes, can noting the image of Mrs. Bates ‘eye socket’, both women had a mass drop after becoming too close to Norman, threatening the dangerous part of her. It’s if he’d brutally ended their lives to escape the eyes of the judge, also described as “windows to the soul”. It means that we can understand the characters emotions and sometimes their thoughts by looking into the characters eyes. Stair is another motif that Alfred Hitchcock used, upstairs represents Norman manifestation of his mother and downstairs represents him as innocent and normal. Hitchcock also uses the McGuffin technique, when Marion Crane stole $40,000 from the realtor’s office. She became a secondary McGuffin after her murder. This clearly emphasis that Alfred Hitchcock effectively uses motifs to develop and represent meaning in the film.
