Alliances that May Have Caused The War in Europe

Have you ever thought people would remember an event that happened many years ago? Well does the Great War come to mind? This war happened over 100 years ago and many people still talk about it or are being taught about the Great War. As time passed by, people realized the causes of this war. In the Great War there were a couple alliances that may have caused the war in Europe.

The first alliance started in 1879 named The Dual Alliance. Germany and Austria-Hungary wanted to protect themselves from Russia, so they created this alliance. About 2 years later in 1881 Austria-Hungary decided to make another alliance, however this time it was with Serbia. Russia was taking over Serbia so this alliance stopped that from happening. In 1882, Germany and Austria-Hungary decided to make another alliance, however in this alliance Italy joined them. This basically stopped Italy from taking Russia’s side.

While Germany and Austria-Hungary were trying to overpower Russia, Russia wasn’t staying behind. In 1894, Russia signed the alliance named Franco-Russian Alliance. Russia and France formed this alliance to protect themselves from Germany and Austria-Hungary. Now in 1904 France and Britain had an agreement, however it wasn’t a real alliance. Britain also decided to have another agreement with Russia three years later. In that same year in 1907 a new alliance was made between Russia, France and Britain to counter the increasing threat from Germany. In 1914, Britain, Russia, and France agreed not to sign for peace separately. The two main alliances were the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy in 1882 and The Triple Entente of Britain, Russia and France.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated the June of 1914. This assassination led the declaration of War. Many say he was a member of the terrorist Black Hand group whether he was or wasn’t the Serbian Nationalist was blamed for his death. Serbian secretly asked Russian for help. It wasn’t long until Germany found out then France and last Britain. Soon all of the armies of Europe were fully mobilized. Some didn’t even know what was going on all they did was follow directions and that was to fire at their enemies. In 1915 German violated human rights. German used poison gas for the very first time. This caused French African troops to choke. Soon after German brought the flamethrower, on May 1915 German sunk an American ship killing 1,198, including 128 Americans. They basically attacked a boat filled with passengers.

It is possible to remember something that happened many years ago. Many people were killed in War World 1. Many alliances were made, yet those alliances caused this dramatic war. One thing lead to another and it wasn’t long until World War 1 started. All we can do now is to remember those brave soldiers that fought in WW1 and innocent victims that died.
