In reviewing Lilah’s three assignments I have come to the conclusion of her character based on her writings. Her three assignments are as followed: a rhetorical analysis on The Denver Omelette, viewing the stakeholder in the movie Fiddler on the Roof, and an argumentative essay urging school boards to adopt a more inclusive sex education policy.
Her first paper on the Denver Omelette, she explored how the author used the omelette to compare the social situation in Denver. Also in this paper she brought to light how the author used rhetorical devices to convince the reader that his words had merritt. She explained to the reader how his use of metaphor would appeal to the reader's emotions. She also told how the reading was about the cultural divisions in Denver. However, in the end she concluded the article was no longer relevant in a cultural since, rather the article still could explain the political divide in Colorado. From her paper it is evident that she is well versed in rhetorical analysis and that she has knowledge on the past and present of her home state.
Her second paper explores the views of the characters from Fiddler on the Roof. Her main focus in the paper is how Tevye bends his views on tradition to fit his daughters’. Tevya goes from being very strict on religion traditions to being more accepting of new idea’s of traditions. She explains how Tevye changes his views to ensure his daughters’ happiness. His oldest daughter doesn’t stray to far from tradition, she marries a jewish man with all the jewish traditions in place except one. She didn’t have a matchmaker pick her husband. Lilah explains how this is acceptable change to tradition because she is still putting value on her father's tradition. The second daughter strays further from tradition by running off with a communist in siberia to wed him. Lilah explains how this daughter is pushing the envelop she is still marrying a jew and has every intention to follow wedding traditions. The third daughter follows no traditions. She marries a Catholic man without getting permission from Tevye. Lilah explains how not putting a value on traditions could be the downfall to a society or culture. From this paper Lilah can be viewed as a person who values tradition and can put herself into other people’s shoes easily.
In her last paper Lilah argues that sex education needs to be taught more effectively in schools. In this paper she brings to light the current issues with the current sex education curriculum. She then goes to explain how bad sex education leads to a multitude of problems for teenagers and adults. She suggest that a program like planned parenthood’s PREP should be taught in all schools. At the very least schools should teach a inclusive and factual sex education. From this paper it can been seen that Lilah wants people to informed on sex, however her paper explaining how she chose this topic is more telling on her character. She explains that she wanted to push for better sex education because of the bullying she faced in high school as well as her general interest in sexuallity. From this it is obvious that she is a thoughtful person.
To sum up Lilah is an overall thoughtful person. All her papers are thought provoking not only to the reader but is obvious she contemplated the many angels of the topic. I would be very interested in reading more of her work.
