An Architectural Student: Academic Achievements

The importance of inspecting human behaviors in architectural design is particularly outspoken by the profound architect Fumihiko Maki. I also agree that the built environment should be shaped with greater concern in the human-focused investigation. The relationship between spatial layout and a range of social, economic, and environmental phenomena should be taken further into notice when designing buildings. Being an interior designer, I have repeatedly worked on a smaller space. Detailing and designing furniture, lighting and human circulation at a micro-scale was a pleasant experience, however, it has certainly given me limitations. I would like to work on a field of macro-scale where patterns of movement, interaction, density, urban growth, and societal differentiation is highly noticed.

At “AAVS Seoul 2017”, I have remarked personal interest in architectural patterns and logic. The workshop’s topic was “Social Algorithm” where the data visualization using OSM(OpenStreetMap) materials and Grasshopper were specially highlighted. The data collection of languages on signboards in search for human behavioral patterns and organizing zones by its characteristic was particularly fascinating. It was a definite approach in enhancing efficiency in mapping large sites through the use of the computational methodology. In completing the AAVS I have driven the learnings further. The project ‘The Archive of Urban Ritual' features data-driven architecture. The project focuses on collecting data relevant to architecture, urbanism, and the social sciences and draws on a wide range of scientific theories, analytic research methods, and configurational approaches to the study of space. Through installing multiple action cameras at a chosen site, I have gathered numerous data such as human counting, traffic analysis, and dwelling time with the aid of Opencv coding.

Academic achievements have channeled my persona into that of a patient yet a perseverant young man. Having gained 1st prize at the “Samsung Construction & Trading” architectural competition, I have seen my full potential as an architectural student. The project tackles on finding architectural solutions for “urban garden in the era of 4th Industrial Revolution”. By occupying the unused rooftop spaces and constructing drone stations, the connectivity of Seoul’s skyline could be optimized. Through winning this competition, I have earned an opportunity in seeing my work published on multiple magazines and articles. These learnings are a valuable asset to me, even so, there is much to be determined. The intense design research approach that the AA pursue would aid me with greater sophisticated architectural logic. The core spirit of AA’s motto is experimental learning with in-depth research categorized in a unit system. I have previously experienced the lively atmosphere of AA in discussing various architectural disciplines at the AAVS. In applying for the third year of architecture course, I would like to pursue experimental research and intake learnings with an open-minded manner at the various units. I truly believe I could develop my own architectural logic at your school. As such, I expressly state my wish to attend AA as I believe I am a suited student.
