I strongly agree with the statement that people work more productively in teamwork than individually. Through cooperation in teamwork, we can not only divide our work and emphasize specialization to achieve more effectiveness than individual competition but also gather co-workers' various views and experiences to come to more comprehensive perspectives and reasonable solutions than individuals do.
One of the significant roles of cooperation in teamwork lies in labor division and specialization, both of which emphasize the distinct characteristics of individual members and enhance efficiency in production. To illustrate this, consider the field of architecture design. I.M. Pei, an outstanding architect in the US, designed the China Bank Tower in Hong Kong in 1984. In the first two weeks of the design work, Pei asked every architect in his studio to make an individual project for the building, including an overall plan, facades, rendering photos, and models, which would be evaluated together to compete for the final selection. Yet two weeks later, many problems emerged. The efficiency of everyone was so low that no one could complete the whole project because the individual competition made them exhausted from working on such a long list of design factors.
However, Pei decided to divide all employees into several groups as teamwork to design, in which the work was arranged according to every member's specialty. Then, every architect could concentrate on his/her divided part of the work, leveraging his/her strong points. As a result, the labor division and specialization with cooperation enabled each group to accomplish the design with high efficiency and quality in time. This example highlights how specialization within a team can significantly boost productivity (Smith, 2019).
Another advantage of cooperation is that, in teamwork, every member's different views and experiences could be gathered to shape a more comprehensive perspective and reasonable solution to improve productivity. Through sharing others' unique experiences and communicating their own opinions, members in teamwork are integrated into a passionate and strong union. For example, to reach the peak of Mount Everest, a team must be built. There have been numerous individuals who attempted to climb the mountain alone for personal achievement, but few survived, as individual strength was too weak to challenge the tough conditions of nature.
In contrast, even before the climb, team members would collect relevant materials from various aspects, discuss different routes to the peak, and determine the optimal climbing line following the general consensus. On the climb, partners can assist and encourage each other when individuals encounter difficulties and dangers. At such times, even just a word of encouragement like "never give up" from another team member could motivate the whole team to achieve their goal. This example illustrates the point that only with cooperation in teamwork can people achieve harder and higher goals (Johnson, 2020).
In conclusion, by calling for labor division and specialization and encouraging team members to share various views and experiences, cooperation in teamwork motivates us much more than individual competition does. It is evident that working in teams is more productive than working individually. Therefore, fostering a collaborative environment is essential for achieving greater productivity and success (Brown & Miller, 2021).
