A piece of gum. The love of Juan and Sarah in the Extra Gum commercial, begins with an eye connection. After spotting each other across the school, the two become a couple as they share a piece of gum for everything they do together, whether it be a day in the park, a first kiss, a day in the snow, a day at the prom, and even fighting. The gum represents the bond that love has and how it can keep two people together no matter how many fights and miles apart they are. Love is proven in this commercial to be long lasting no matter what, like gum.

A love story. Everyone, even if they do not admit it, wants to find that special someone to share the rest of their life with. The love story of Juan and Sarah unravel right in front of our eyes, and we see what falling in love is all about. Since that audience sees their love develop first hand, they are able to follow the love of Juan and Sara every step of the way. This forms a connection between the audience, because they feel as if they know the characters personally. The commercial is able to appeal to a wide range of people because everyone wants to fall in love or already has a love. An ad about gum alone is not interesting, but a lot of people can relate to the feeling of having or wanting a special someone.

Connection. What better way to keep a relationship together than gum and love. I can connect with this commercial like many other viewers do. I have fallen in love with a man who I met at a movie theater on a random Friday night. I have left home far away after graduating high school while leaving my love at home. I have a long distance relationship that is not always laughs and giggles, but still feels like sparks we had on our first date. The fact that the couples most memorable memories together are normal everyday things, like going to the park, makes it more intimate and romantic. Sooner at later the audience is hooked on the commercial because they see how if love can be found between two people across a crowded school, than anybody can meet their soulmate when they least expect it. If the commercial did not have a packet of gum at the beginning, than if would have just looked like a movie promotion, due to how intimate the characters were.

Whether it be love you have with your spouse, family, or friends, it can be used to depict love and sell. Companies use emotion and feelings in their ads in order for people to buy their product based of how it makes them feel. If you are watching a commercial about love it will make you feel sentimental and nostalgic, and you will end up buying the product just because it has played on your feelings. Although it seems as if the two characters were meant to be together, love it distorted to look that way, in order to get the viewers to feel a particular way. Companies know if they broadcast a cliché love story, that people will be connected to the romance. People do not want to be reminded of all the hardships of being in a relationship, so they find assurance in a commercial were the couple lives happily ever after. The real world offers a more real and strong love, while commercials offer a more intimate and desirable love. Viewers realize that this is not real, but that it is a pleasant fantasy to live in. The bond of love can be shared by anyone no matter who they are, what they like, or how they look. It is a feeling nobody can shake every if they wanted to. Love brings people together and keeps them together when all gets tough. Love is in the air and there is no way of getting rid of it, so just go and get it.
