What is so amazing about smartphones that the world can’t get their eyes off them? Some people may say they help them keep track of things. Others might say that their phone only causes distractions and slows down everyday processes. Wake up, people! Smartphones are an addiction. On average, people check their phone 10 times in an hour span (Smith, 2020).
This pocket-sized computer is making people so unproductive because social media is constantly available. From personal experience, it is difficult to get off Facebook to study, write a paper, or complete homework. I know I’m not the only one that experiences this. Everyone loves seeing what everyone else is doing with their life, instead of focusing on their own life. Those that rely on smartphones might say that social media keeps us connected to friends and family, which it does; then again, so does a phone call or a lunch date. People would get a lot more done without the distractions of social media (Jones, 2018).
Smartphones cause simple everyday routines to be postponed due to all applications and messaging. People are constantly looking down at their phone multiple times a day, whether walking to class or driving to work. We could get a lot more done if we kept our phone at home, in our office, or somewhere safe. Just like the old days, if someone really needs to get in touch with us, they will leave a message, right? There is no need to always take our smartphone out to check the latest news, do online shopping, check Twitter, or even comment on the most popular post on Facebook. That is what personal time is for, not while at work or class (Johnson, 2019).
Smartphones interfere with productivity at work. For example, when I get that one message about the plans for the night, and all my friends are messaging me about it. Instead of working to my fullest, I start thinking about the outfit I’m going to wear, or how I should do my hair. When I start rushing to leave, I usually forget to do important things instead of completing a task at work at the right time. People might be distracted by the newest application that just came out. Smartphones make it easy for employees to reach each other in times of need. Work should not be brought into your home, and home shouldn’t be brought into work. I tend to call my mom a lot while she is at work, and she never sounds too thrilled. It’s stressing her out to deal with problems at home as well as problems at work. To maintain a healthy balance between work and home, people have to limit the time they spend on their smartphone at both places (Brown, 2021).
Smartphones make us unproductive and waste time. Many of us can think of reasons why it makes each one of our days less productive or useless. Let’s do something to help our generation! We need people to see the world without a smartphone glued to their hands. If we can acknowledge the problem, we can take steps towards a more balanced and fulfilling life.
