The well-known and everlasting name, Mahatma Gandhi was a man of hope and determination. He was one of the hundreds of protesters who fought for Indian independence from the British reign and fought for the rights of the poor. Though he was unique in his own way as he chose to go down a different path to gain victory rather than follow everyone else’s way of fighting over them. He chose peace for all and he wanted to protest but in a non-violent way which was extremely unusual to win the fight. He was all about serenity and he made a huge impact on people and was one of the main causes for winning over the British. Today his portrait is on all indian currency notes and the reason for this was stated as, “No other personality could better represent the ethos of the country than Mahatma Gandhi.” He is a man that is indescribable in words. One of his iconic sayings was, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”, which will be discussed in this essay. This has a deep meaning and a moral to it and will be remembered by all for years to come. There were many aspects to this short saying even if it might not seem so. If people in this generation and the upcoming ones understand and follow this rule, the world will be a much better place to live in.
One of the deeper meanings to this saying is resembling one of determination and the right way to act when you have a passion to do something. The saying of Mahatma Gandhi resembles that the change has to start with you, the change may end with someone else, but you have to be responsible and act first to get it going. You need to be able to understand how much it takes to transform yourself into the desired self and then you will understand how it is for others who try to change themselves for the better. You have to develop as a person and change yourself from the flaws you have and get a new perspective on things you always just assumed and to have an open-minded personality on certain aspects in life as you go along. You can’t make change appear in the world or in others without you being adaptable to change yourself. You have to be the role-model to be able to guide others to change. You have to be persistent to make the change happen, in yourselves and in the people around you and not do it half-heartedly. You also have to be able to accept that you have flaws within and that you need to change them in order to change others; this might be one of the hardest bits for people, to accept themselves as well as to embrace their flaws. Altogether, personal growth is essential to develop as a person and to obtain change from others.
As well as initiating personal change, you also have to be able to not get influenced by others or other things and to be able to stand out and be unique if necessary. Such example is Mahatma Gandhi. Giving speeches and promoting non-violence was one of the main causes for winning over the British. Gandhi’s one of many morals was to lead as an example instead of being one of the followers. You have to be self-controlled and be able to make decisions without being manipulated by others and having the willpower to not get influenced is essential for personal growth and to go ahead with your life. You cannot rely on others to make the changes, you will have to be making the choices yourself to develop change in yourself and in others. Independence is vital for growth and becoming independent is part of changing yourself for the better.
Also, as stated before accepting yourself and your flaws are a major part in developing as a person. You have to be held accountable for your actions and have to accept your mistakes and wrongdoings instead of finding excuses and giving reasons to get out of it. Giving reasons for something that happened and not accepting it as your fault can damage your personal development as well as stopping you from being able to transform into a better version of yourself and for others. Blaming, denying or justifying can be harmful and they make an impact on your mindset and actions.Being responsible for your actions will give you the strength to move forward and make changes in your life as well as making a difference in other’s lives. Accepting your mistakes and taking responsibility of them helps you throughout your journey to “be the change you wish to see in the world”.
To conclude, change is essential to be able to survive and it has to begin with you and then it is able to be spread around. Your goal should change you as a person along the way as well as it reaching to the desired result in which you hoped it would. The famous saying of Mahatma Gandhi’s has a deep meaning to it and there are different aspects that you need to be able to identify from the saying and to be able to use them in the real world in your own life to be successful in life and to make your life better as well as to make the world a better place to live in for everyone. ‘From little things big things grow’ is something to remember in life. Starting to change yourself for the better from your flaws and attitudes and actions towards certain things will impact you as a person as well as giving you the ability to change others and other things that you hoped to change. Though to begin with you have to start making the changes with yourself before presenting yourself to the rest of the world and attempting to mould the world into the way you wanted to see it as.
