India is the global leader in the world cashew business, and the cashew-nut industry is one of the most significant food processing industries globally. India stands as the largest producer, processor, exporter, and importer of cashew nuts. The country plays a vital role in supplying cashews to the rest of the world and in meeting global demand. With tremendous potential for cashew production and export, India earns more than 2000 crore rupees annually through cashew trade (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2021).
The cashew industry is one of the essential small-scale industries in India, significantly contributing to rural development. It generates over 400,000 jobs in remote areas, with 95% of the workforce being women. The industry provides income to poor cashew farmers, with the majority of processing units being small and cottage-based. By doing so, it helps prevent the migration of young farmers in search of employment opportunities, motivates rural entrepreneurship development, and aids in environmental protection (World Bank, 2020).
Despite its potential, the cashew processing industry faces several challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient raw cashew supply, limited financial availability, raw cashew collection issues, lack of warehouses, marketing difficulties for cashew kernels, and a lack of technical knowledge, especially in processing technology and finished product packaging. These challenges hinder the industry's ability to maximize its prospects, which include increased cashew cultivation, employment generation, the formation of processing units, alcohol production from cashew apples, shield oil production, rural development, poverty elimination, and social and economic upliftment (International Monetary Fund, 2021).
The cashew industry has vast potential in both domestic and foreign markets. Cashews are often referred to as a "poor man's crop but a rich man's food," serving as a crucial source of income and livelihood for poor farmers. The industry can play a significant role in developing hilly regions. The most pressing issue within the cashew processing industry is processing and packaging. Poor processing significantly reduces the quality of cashew kernels, especially when they break, which decreases their market value compared to whole kernels and renders them ineligible for export (Singh & Kumar, 2019).
Proper packaging is critical, as exposure to moisture can ruin the taste of cashew kernels. International trade in cashew nuts depends on two key factors: processing and packaging. The processing work relies heavily on the physical performance of workers, making a large workforce essential. Many cashew processing units have closed due to insufficient workforce availability. However, with advancements in technology, this scenario is slowly changing, and improvements in processing work are being observed (Sharma, 2022).
Exploring all aspects of the cashew industry in India is crucial for understanding its role in economic development. The industry has the potential to drive inclusive growth and poverty eradication, as recognized by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. This demonstrates the importance of the cashew business and its strong presence in India. With proper attention to the challenges and opportunities, the cashew industry can continue to thrive and contribute significantly to India's economy (Government of India, 2023).
