It goes without saying that the world is run by technology, innovations and discoveries made by mankind to this day. All that has changed the way people view the world, the way they live and the way life is made way better by the above mentioned. This essay will show that cell phones are the greatest innovation that there is out there. They have become a very large part of our lives that a lot of people live almost all of their lives on their cell phones. The way I’m going to go about supporting my statement is by using social media outlets, magazines and newspaper articles that show how much of an impact cell phones have in our lives.
“The world’s first mobile phone call was made on April 3, 1973, when Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, called a rival telecommunications company and informed them he was speaking via a mobile phone. The phone Cooper used, if you could call it that, weighed a staggering 1. 1kg and measured in at 228. 6x127x44. 4mm. With this prototype device, you got 30 minutes of talk-time and it took around 10 hours to charge. ” Motorola was the first company to launch a mobile phone on 03 April 1973. The early mobile phones were referred to as zero generation mobile phones. “0G (Zero Generation) is also known as Mobile Radio Telephone System. As this generation was invented prior to cellular system it was mentioned as pre cellular system. This system was analog in nature i. e. analog signals were used as carriers. ” Early mobile phones offered about 20 minutes talk time and took 10 hours to fully recharge. Now we can have a phone fully recharge in about 50 minutes!
Cell phones have become so advanced over the years such that most of the things people do is through their cell phones. People now live almost all of their lives on their cell phones. Some people cannot even be in in a car, room or any other place without their cell phone as they would find everything around them strange. ““The fact that we use our phones twice as many times as we think we do indicates that a lot of smartphone use seems to be habitual, automatic behaviours that we have no awareness of, ” Dr. Sally Andrews, a psychologist at Nottingham Trent University and the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post in an email”. This goes on to show how connected we have become with our cell phones. They have become a very large part of our lives. People are informed through their cell phones for new updates on the internet such as job interviews and their school results. People love music, games, looking at pictures, watching videos, basically entertainment. All this can be done on their smartphones. “A smartphone is a device that lets you make telephone calls, but also adds in features that, in the past, you would have found only on a personal digital assistant or a computer -- such as the ability to send and receive email and edit documents. ”
Cell phones offer a whole lot of things that were previously found in different devices. Back then, a cell phone’s only purpose was to make phone calls but now people can do whatever they like on them. Photographers can now simply walk around using their phone to take pics; there is no need to be having their heavy digital cameras with. People do not need translators as they used to as their cell phones can do all the work for them. We do not need to carry mp3s and iPods for music. With cell phones, the internet has become cheaper than when it is used to be on computers. Cell phones are a very good way of saving money as you do not need to buy many devices with different functions. People doing construction work and building houses can check the weather of the following day or week through their cell phones so that they may know when is best to work. It is of no doubt that cell phones impact people’s lives in a very positive manner.
One of the most obvious reasons to own a cell phone for is social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Social media gives people the platform to have confidence that they do not get to have when they are around people. Some people use social media for entertainment purposes, some for just staying relevant in today’s world and some use it for educational purposes. People can build their social skills and confidence through social media by talking to people of different ethics, cultures and backgrounds, online. Regarding people that use social media for educational purposes, their lives have become so much better as they can ask questions or for explanations to things they did not quite understand in class. This allows anyone to move at their own pace while studying on their cell phones alone at home. “The convenience of cell phones just might be the final answer as to why they may soon be adopted in classrooms across the globe. Cell phones can help strengthen the essential connections between students with teachers, make students more self-directed, and they can make education more applicable to real life. ” This goes on to show how much the importance of cell phones is in enhancing the present and future life.
In a business, no matter how big or small it is, a cell phone is one thing you are going to need the most over anything else. You are going to need it so that you can know what is new or has become popular so your business stays relevant. When new investors or tenders want to work with you, they are going to get hold of you through a phone call, email or any other form of contact through your phone. Cell phones greatly help in the country’s economy and communities. If you get updates on new and popular things, your company will do well and expand and have you hire more people. This would help improve the employment rate in South Africa and help a lot of families in the community not to go to bed with an empty stomach. Your business will then inspire young entrepreneurs to do more so that they may also expand their businesses and help the community. “Fishermen in Kerala, India, who are able to use mobile phones to search for the best market prices for their product, see an increase in their incomes by 8%. Since the quantity of fish brought to the market increases with the rise in farmer's income, consumer prices fall by 4% according to the Harvard economist Robert Jensen (2007).
There is nothing in this world that could accommodate anyone and everyone like cell phones do. They accommodate everyone because anyone could manipulate them to their own liking. There are about 6. 8 billion cell phone subscriptions in the world, which is almost equal to the 7 billion population of the world. Some people would even see cell phones as their mini god as they find them to be the solutions to almost everything! For instance, someone who feels their life does not matter would watch videos, read articles or talk to people online, through their cell phone, who would help and guide them in order for them to get their lives back on track. A simple phone call made to the helplines by a person with suicidal thoughts could greatly help them from taking their life. This would not have just helped the suicidal person but their family and the people around them from depression and sadness. All this could be done from a simple phone call.
The world would not be what it is today without cell phones. People use their cell phones way more than they think they do. They live all of their lives on their cell phones without noticing it. If all the cell phones in the world were to be switched off for only just day, everything would stop, people would not think be able to think straight. A lot of them may even feel non-existent. Businesses as well as many countries’ economies would fall apart. It is of no doubt that cell phones are the greatest innovation there is.
