Personality is a pretty complicated part of human behavior that affects how we think, feel, and act. It includes a bunch of traits, characteristics, and behavior patterns that shape who we are and how we interact with others. In this essay, I’m gonna dive into the different aspects of my personality, like my temperament, emotional stability, and how I deal with people. By looking at these parts, I hope to give a clear picture of the unique mix of traits that make up who I am.
One big part of my personality is my temperament, which is basically my natural way of reacting emotionally and behaviorally. According to Thomas and Chess (1977), people can be sorted into different temperament types based on how active, adaptable, and emotionally reactive they are. For me, I’m mostly calm and easygoing. I don’t get too worked up emotionally and I like routine and stability.
Research says that temperament comes from both genetics and the environment. Studies show that genes account for about half of the differences in people's temperaments (Plomin, DeFries, & Loehlin, 1977). Also, things like parenting style, cultural norms, and early experiences shape temperament too (Rothbart & Bates, 2006). So, my calm and easygoing nature probably comes from a mix of genetic factors and a supportive environment when I was growing up.
Another key aspect of my personality is emotional stability. This means I can stay calm and bounce back when faced with stress, problems, or negative emotions. Emotional stability is part of the Big Five personality traits, which also include neuroticism (Costa & McCrae, 1992). People who are emotionally stable don’t often feel anxious, depressed, or angry and can handle life’s challenges better.
Studies have shown that being emotionally stable affects many parts of life, like mental and physical health, relationships, and job success (Lahey, 2009). For example, people with high emotional stability are less likely to have mood disorders, are generally healthier, and do better at work (Steel, Schmidt, & Shultz, 2008). In my case, I’ve shown strong emotional stability, which helps me stay calm and resilient during tough times.
Besides temperament and emotional stability, how I handle relationships is also a big part of my personality. People often describe me as empathetic, compassionate, and considerate. These traits reflect how I relate to and communicate with others. According to Wiggins (1996), people’s interpersonal styles can be categorized based on assertiveness and warmth. I tend to be warm and friendly, genuinely caring about others and preferring peaceful and cooperative interactions.
Research has found that good relationships are really important for well-being and life satisfaction. Positive and supportive relationships are linked to better mental and physical health (Holt-Lunstad, Smith, & Layton, 2010). Plus, people with good interpersonal skills tend to do well in their careers, social lives, and romantic relationships (Barrick & Mount, 1991). So, my warm and friendly nature has helped me build strong personal relationships and contributed to my overall happiness and success.
To wrap it up, my personality is made up of a mix of traits and behaviors that define who I am and how I interact with others. My temperament, emotional stability, and approach to relationships are all key parts of my personality, each adding to my unique strengths and weaknesses. By looking at these aspects of my personality, I’ve gained a better understanding of myself and what influences my thoughts, feelings, and actions. Moving forward, I want to keep exploring and developing my personality, using my strengths and working on my weaknesses, to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
