The sky was grey, as were the faces around me.There are moments in a person’s life that define or change them. These could be huge, previously thought-to-be impossible events or something as small as getting the dog you have always wanted. My life hasn’t had too many crazy things happen, but let me tell you about my favorite change.
It all started in April 2013, a fairly chilly day in the middle of nowhere, Ohio. I had lived in that town where almost everyone knew each other for most 16 years of my life, all of it leading up to that point. That’s when my mother broke the news to me. We were moving. A lot of thought was put into where we would go, we decided paradise was best for us, that’s how I ended up here. How is this life-changing, you ask? Let me get to that.
Growing up in a town where I knew everyone was boring. I wanted to see and experience the world. I wanted to go to more than one grocery store or gas station everyday. I wanted excitement. The weather was cold, the people were sad, the air was crisp and the skies were grey. After visiting family in Fort Walton Beach the previous year, I knew I would love it. Just a few months later in July 2013, it happened. There were new faces everywhere I turned. There are still so many exciting things I have yet to experience.
Life here moves fast…unlike the traffic. Living in a tourist town has its perks. Though most people hate the lifestyle, I live for it, crave it even. You see, my job is exciting. I work at an arcade and family entertainment zone right across from the beach. I spend my time seeing and talking to people who come from all over the world. After a long day’s work, I get to go to the beach. That usually isn’t too exciting to native Floridians but it’s something that instantly puts a smile on my face.
A goal of mine has always been to travel, to see and experience everything the world has to offer. I don’t feel the need to do that as much now that the world is kind of in my backyard. It’s nearly impossible not to find and talk to a new person everyday; a new person that can offer new advice and insight, a new person to share stories with, a new person to tell me all about some other part of the world. The best part? My dream has become a reality and part of my daily life.
Here, skies and water are blue, the air is salty and the people are happy. I never fail to find adventure here. I’m living in the town I always dreamed of. Some of my favorite activities involve the sandy, white beach or the emerald green water. Thanks Mom for making the best, life-altering decision possible . It has truly changed my life.
