The Opioid epidemic has always been an issue, however, more light has been shed on it as of late, as Congress is close to passing a bill that would fund at least 1 billion dollars to address the heroin epidemic. However, the concern is due to corruption within the pharmaceutical branches. The funding that comes with this have been altered, in order to benefit pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Although the main focus and goal was to tackle the opioid epidemic, there seems to be a rise in overdoses. In the process of this broad investment in helping the issue, lawmakers have been influenced to add more popular, as well as specific additions to the specifications and focus of Congress’ subsidies. Death from heroin use has dramatically spiked, and our healthcare systems are outdated, and ill-equipped to handle the new variables to the situation.

Existing treatment plans, are not suitable to the changes in the genetic mutations as well, thus making treatment simply another way to provide profit to pharmaceutical and medical device corporations, and not to actually benefit the general population. Newer bills do contain developments, however, provide no funding to actually implement those developments. The need to address the heroin epidemic has become imperative, as those parents who do heroin, can give birth to children that will also suffer from heroin withdrawals.

Regardless of the developments that are being made, Congress still has yet to help states contain, and overcome the ever growing crisis. The US government will need to provide emergency funding, as well as increase investments in prevention, addiction, and treatment centers across the country. Although the lobbying for this bill has been heavy as well as popular, many state that it is actually a cover up for huge government funding to large drug companies, even if most politicians agree with the content of the bill.
