One attribute exists, that is possessed by everybody and is a tool that makes people happy or even lead to success. It is an ability to build better social connections and face various unexpected challenges without any worries. The standard definition of this quality is: 'an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome' (Merriam-Webster, 2023). In general, the attribute is called optimism.
In fact, many people tend to confuse the definition of being happy with being optimistic. Happiness is a priceless emotional state that can be reached by many factors, especially by being optimistic. Furthermore, optimism is a full-time tendency to expect things to be perceived from a positive perspective. For example, when someone says "I am positive," people might think that he means that he is happy, but in fact, this is not entirely true because he can be positive without being happy, or vice versa. Apparently, optimism seems to be a way in which many people may become happier. The point is that so-called positive thinking helps people to appreciate everything they have in their lives. Through this kind of appreciation, true happiness can be attained. What is more, it is an attribute that can be possessed by everyone. Judging from that, optimism is an innate characteristic, and it is only our choice whether to be optimistic or not. For example, when somebody wants to be positive, he can start by being optimistic about everything in his life, so that he can choose both of these things to achieve his goals. Moreover, optimism can provide a buffer against stress, making it easier to navigate through life's difficulties (Seligman, 2006).
Optimism, or positive thinking, is a word derived from the Latin word 'optimus.' The term under consideration is the opposite of the term pessimism. Both optimism and pessimism are learned and used to explain either positive or negative events in life. Both behavior types are actively influenced by environmental factors. What is more, it is often suggested that optimism can be inherited as a reflection of various factors, such as intelligence and temperament (Peterson, 2000). The ability to maintain an optimistic outlook can be influenced by one's upbringing, social environment, and personal experiences, highlighting the complex interplay between nature and nurture.
To conclude, optimism is often misunderstood or given a wrong definition. It is incorrect to substantiate whether an individual is an optimist by judging his or her social behavior in the community. A person can continuously smile, laugh, and joke. However, these actions can be interpreted as a type of irony, hypocrisy, or just today's good mood. Consequently, optimism is more a way of thinking about various life events rather than a particular kind of social behavior. Understanding the true essence of optimism can lead to a more fulfilling and resilient life, where challenges are met with a hopeful and constructive mindset.
