Automation: A Transformation of Work Processes

Automation is the conversion of a process, procedure, or equipment to automatic rather than human operation or management. It doesn't simply transfer human functions to machines but involves a comprehensive reorganization of the work process, during which both human and machine functions are redefined. Early automation relied on mechanical and mechanical device control devices; over the last forty years, however, the computer has gradually become the leading vehicle of automation. Modern automation is typically associated with mechanization.

Description and Applications of Home Automation

Automation plays a crucial role in the global economy and everyday experience. Engineers are working to create advanced systems for rapid development programs and human activities by integrating scientific disciplines and drafting tools with automated devices. Most jobs for people in industrial processes are outside the automation field. The ability to recognize human-level patterns, language recognition, and language production is superior to modern machine and automated data processing system functions. Jobs requiring high-level tasks and strategic planning, such as advanced sensor data synthesis and sound, currently necessitate human skills. In addition to the production of automated high-end industries, it has had a broad impact. For example, once a telephone splitter has been installed, most of the time, an automated telephone patch board and electronic device handle the operations. Preliminary screening or analysis of human genes, as well as radio and medical procedures like laboratory work, blood vessel analysis, cell examination, and nerve studies, are performed quickly and mechanically within the system.

Home Automation

The concept of a smart home involves integrating technology and services through the home network for enhanced quality of life. It allows different technologies to manage home components, control and manage alternative components, and effectively communicate with them, thus enabling home activities without user interruptions. Automation makes these processes more flexible, efficient, secure, and cost-effective. In some cases, integration of home services allows them to communicate with each other through the home controller, offering a single button to manage different home systems according to suggested settings or functional tasks.

Smart homes can improve home comfort, convenience, security, and energy management. Additionally, they can be beneficial for elderly individuals and those with disabilities, providing a safe and secure environment.

Smart home network technology can be divided into two key types: wired and wireless systems. In the wired system, various types of wires can be installed within the walls. Most domestic automation devices are connected to wiring systems such as new wire (battered, optical fiber), power lines, buses, and so on. A typical technology is the X10 protocol, which provides internet quality for home automation. X10 transfers binary data using amplitude modulation (AM) techniques and X10 controls send alerts over AC wires for incoming modes.

In the Building Management System (BMS), there are two essential components: the sender and the receiver. Many new devices use wireless technology for connections with other devices. Wireless connection systems include microphone, infrared (IR), radio frequency (RF), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11, and so on. Also, some standard home-based networks can work using both a wiring system and a wireless system. One example of wireless communication systems for the smart home is Z-wave, which is a reliable and affordable base home automation solution.

Applications of Smart Home Systems

Security

Security systems, like Canary, adapt the home over time and send intelligent notifications directly to your smartphone with HD video. Such systems are an example of how smart home technology enhances security by providing real-time monitoring and alerts (Smith, 2021).

Energy Management

One of the key benefits smart homes offer to consumers is the ability to integrate energy management functions through lighting, air conditioning, and consumer electronics. These systems not only reduce energy consumption but also contribute to a sustainable environment (Johnson & Lee, 2020).

Lighting

The lighting in a smart home can be turned on and off automatically based on occupancy sensors. For instance, if a person enters a room during the day, the system will open the curtains instead of turning on the lights, while at night, it will ensure the lights are on and turn them off when no one is in the room.

Air Conditioner

By properly positioning temperature sensors and using heating and cooling timers, you can save money by reducing energy usage and turning off the air conditioning when no one is in the house. Such systems ensure that comfort is not compromised while maintaining efficiency (Doe, 2019).

Home Appliances

Smart homes can help improve energy management by tracking energy usage across all devices within the house. The smart home controller is used to make the best use of the highest electricity rates by operating appliances with high power consumption (e.g., dishwashers and electric water heaters) efficiently (Brown & Taylor, 2022).
