Introduction:
This report discusses the danger and safety of using vehicles and mentioned some statistics. Also, the report discusses the intelligent transportation system and its advantages. Moreover, the report examines the human factor errors and mentioned some of the computerized features that solved this errors. Finally, the report discusses the problem of cars hacking and the systems errors. However, the specific purpose of this report is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computerized safety features in vehicles taking BMW vehicles for example.
I. Background:
This section will discuss and describe some basic information about vehicles safety.
A. Danger and safety in vehicles:
Cars are one of the most efficient transportation to be used in the world and especially in Europe. But, the question is: Are cars save? There are many dangers sources while driving a car. Firstly, the car its self the break might break down or tires pump up. Secondly, the road and what is around. Thirdly, other drivers, some driver changing lane surprise. And most importantly, is you as a driver, by using your mobile or any other driverless habits. All of these could result in deadly injuries. On the other hand, cars including safety features such as airbags, sensors, and other safety systems.
B. History and statistic:
According to Destatis 257 people died in car accident in Germany in April 2018. Moreover, the number of injured people increased by 16.1% over the last year in the same month (Destatis,2018). Cars and collision have been related for ages. In Germany for example: 228,024 car accidents just in 2017(Destatis,2018).
II. Advantages:
This section of the report will discuss the advantages of computerized safety features. And how the computerized safety features and the intelligent transportation system improve the driver experience. And make it safer, taking BMW cars as an example. Also, the human factor error will be discussed in this section.
A. Intelligent transportation system:
The intelligent transportation system is a part of the internet of things. Internet of things is a system that produces the capability and makes the communication between the machines and other electronic devices possible. Moreover, the internet of things gives the machines the opportunity to communicate with people. Hence the intelligent transportation system gives the vehicles the opportunity to communicate with each other, in vehicles to vehicles (V2V) communication (Rouse,2017). So, that provides a lot of applications such as connect vehicle location to other vehicles. Moreover, the local mentoring center that mentors the traffic and manages speed cameras, the traffic lights, and transit signal priority. Be able to locate any vehicle in any time. Not only locate the vehicle the mentoring center would get a lot of information about the vehicle statues. Also, the vehicle would be able to report automatically and alert if any irregular things happened. For example, the BMW vehicles provide immediate assistance in an emergency. If the airbags deployed the safety system of the car will call immediately and automatically the emergency call center in your region and report via an independent telephone unite installed primarily in the vehicle. Also, the system will try to connect you by the call center of the company. So, they are able to know any more details about your curtain situation ("BMW ConnectedDrive : BMW Emergency and Accident Call", 2018).
B. Reducing Human Factor Error:
The transportation process usually includes a vehicle and a human who is lead the vehicle and control it. "It is one thing to say that a machine is working better than the average human," (Sacks, 2018). In addition, as a human, we have some limitations. And these limitations provide some errors. This section of the report will discuss how the computerized safety features solved some of these limitations.
1. Parking Assistant:
Parking the vehicle is one of the most action that needs attention and accuracy from the driver. In addition, it is one of the most actions that end by small collision or scratch on the vehicle. Moreover, it usually takes time because of the need for accuracy. Parking assistant is a computerized feature that provides fully automated parking action. It had full control on the gear forward and reverse also, full control on the break. This ability is available in BMW X6 and some other BMW vehicles ("BMW X6 : Driver Assistance", 2018).
2. Surround View:
Data analysis shows that one of the reasons for cars accident is the shortage of the driver capability in see what's surrounding the vehicle. Moreover, the driver usually has three or more blinded points. So, this feature gives the driver a birds-eye that has a 360-degree view (Howard, 2014). And display an overhead view of the vehicle. Moreover, it is alert the driver if the vehicle gets close to any danger.
3. Airbags:
If cars safety systems had been mentioned the first things come in mind is airbags. Hence, it is really saved thousands of lives. The airbags system is programmed to deploy itself if the vehicle collides. The airbags will deploy in front of the driver and the passenger in a purpose of saving the driver and the passengers from getting hearts. Because of the human inertia force.
III. Disadvantages:
This section of the report will discuss the disadvantages of computerized safety features. In particular, will discuss the problem of been hacked and the systems error.
A. Hacking:
Hacking is usually related to computers, emails, and website. But what about cars. Are cars hackable actually it seems not? Moreover, it looks like there is no relation between cars and hackers. But the truth is that cars are hackable. The first known car hacking is when two researchers proved that they could hijack a moving vehicle on a highway (Greenberg et al., 2017). And since that, the cybersecurity industry gets more interest in this filed. Moreover, this all possible because of the internet of things and the intelligent transportation system that installed in the vehicles. In addition, hacking a vehicle is not only about play with some control system of the car. It is almost about still the car. If the hacker gets into the car's computer, he would have the chance to control everything in the car from the AC system to the brake system to all of the other car systems. More importantly is that if all vehicles are hackable that's mean cars are not safe anymore. And we might witness a remote murderer by hackers. Also, that will give a chance of thinking about hacking aircraft, trains, or any transportations vehicles. And this will lead too a whole mess.
B. System Errors:
One of the most disadvantages that appear because of the computerized safety features in vehicles is system errors. In addition, it is the most disadvantages car users complaining about. Moreover, it is very confusing. In addition, system error such wrong alert about a damaged part of the vehicle might lead the vehicle user to replace things or fix things there is no need to take an action with. Also, the repetition of systems errors is reducing the likelihood of using self-driving cars in the near future.
C. High-Cost:
The use of computerized safety feature in vehicles leads to increase the prices of the vehicles. Nowadays, there are some vehicles cost more than SR 10 million. Surely, the cost of computerized safety features are including. Moreover, some sport fancy cars need very accurate computerized safety features to accelerate as fast as possible and to be able to help the driver when needed. Also, regular cars use computerized safety features and some of these features cost more than SR 2000, and the more modern the features the more it cost. That all lead to high-cost. Moreover, if features broke down it is usually not able to be fixed easily.
VI. Conclusion:
In conclusion, there are several disadvantages of computerized safety feature in vehicles. Although, these disadvantages are serious problems and will affect the whole society. However, there is also a lot of advantages and needs to computerized safety feature in vehicles. Moreover, most of the disadvantages able to be solved by scientists and the more and more researches in the cybersecurity industry. Moreover, some computerized safety features in vehicles are highly needed. In the end, I believe that computerized safety feature in vehicles is very helpful and should the universities and companies do more and more researches in this important field.
