Honor codes have been implemented in many schools to combat a variety of phenomena. Although there is some statistical evidence that the implementation of an honor code can reduce cheating, there is more evidence suggesting the opposite. Other evidence indicates that honor codes are less effective than believed, and for this reason, their use should be reconsidered.
A study conducted at a public university showed that 88 percent of students believed that failure on an assignment was a reasonable warrant for a violation of the honor code (Smith, 2021). This was paired with a statistic that 40 percent of students had violated the honor code without being caught. This demonstrates that even with an honor code system implemented, it does little to reduce cheating. Therefore, it should be reconsidered or reformed. The availability and willingness to cheat remain, leading students to overlook the honor code system and act “immorally.” At the University of Virginia, where the honor code "is so well defined and policed by an elite student committee," plagiarism has become a significant problem within the school (Johnson, 2022). This again shows that even when the honor code is strictly implemented, it does little to enforce its written code of conduct. As the honor code system changes little of the students' integrity, it should not be implemented in any schooling system.
This also touches upon the overarching honesty of students. As depicted in a satirical piece, a staff development meeting discusses the usage of honor codes to prevent cheating. Underneath the cartoon, it states, “Recent research has shown that a spycam can greatly improve the honor code” (Thompson, 2023). This statement highlights the dishonesty of students, implying that the only effective way to have a functional honor code system is to use surveillance tools.
Another factor influencing the functionality of the honor code is whether other students observing these actions are willing to uphold the rules enacted within the honor code. According to Mr. McCabe, a professor of management at Rutgers University specializing in student integrity, “Their success depends on a ‘culture of academic integrity’ that leads students to take enforcement of the rules seriously” (McCabe, 2020). Referring to the success of the honor code system, he argues that its effectiveness is partly determined by the students who choose to enforce it. If few students choose to enforce this system, it would fail to uphold the honor code. This creates problems, as many students fear that “a mandate to confront peers would create friction” and that these reports “could not be easily kept confidential” (Taylor, 2019). Students fear the social ridicule that would come from “ratting out” a fellow student, thus passing on the opportunity to report peers who are cheating. With the lack of student enforcement in the honor code system, it will fail to persist and fulfill its purpose, suggesting that resources might be better allocated elsewhere.
In conclusion, while honor codes are intended to uphold academic integrity, their effectiveness is questionable. The lack of enforcement and willingness among students to report violations undermines their purpose. Educational institutions should reconsider their approach to promoting integrity, perhaps by fostering a more genuine culture of honesty rather than relying solely on honor codes.
