Medicine fascinates me because it offers the enthrallment of an elaborate and rapidly developing science. From a young age, I have held an interest in the human body with one particular question in mind: how does it work? I would love the chance to expand my knowledge of human complexity. Engaging with the intricate mechanisms of the body presents a lifelong learning journey that excites me deeply.
Throughout the last few years, I have seen that the qualities of a good doctor are essential ones: benevolence, empathy, and diligence. I feel that there could be no more gratifying vocation than that of the medical profession. Reading "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi has highlighted to me that it is not just about stopping someone's suffering; it is about staying with them on a journey while sharing their joy and sorrow (Kalanithi, 2016). Medicine is a lifelong expedition; it is an opportunity for me to confront the natural challenges that encounter humanity. Weekly, I undertake work experience at a center for adults with learning difficulties. During my time here, I have improved my knowledge of different medical disorders and have learned about various ways of communicating, including non-verbal. This made me aware of their individual healthcare needs and challenges in relation to their care, thus giving me a broad insight into the fundamental characteristics that a doctor must possess, namely, being caring and approachable at all times—all of which I believe are leading traits of my personality.
After having the chance to discuss the profession with a junior doctor, she described some of her strenuous times: from working endless hours to dealing with stubborn patients. Nevertheless, witnessing patients improving is what motivates her to do what she does. I understand how being a physician can be incredibly grueling at times, but the satisfaction of helping someone is a feeling I strive for. Currently working at McDonald's for over a year has allowed me to greatly advance my interpersonal skills. Regularly dealing with customers while remaining calm, despite some troublesome interactions, is incredibly important in my role as a crew member. I have become accustomed to the high-pressure environment and feel that I would not only handle but also thrive on the quick momentum and hardship of the hospital. Teamwork is also vital in this position and is necessary for the provision of quality healthcare; we have to work together to ensure that consumers are satisfied with our services.
I am pleased to have achieved a harmony between my studies and extracurricular life. I am Head Girl of an Academy of over 2,000 students strong. This authorization allows me to establish my confidence and natural skill for leadership in the school community as I am responsible for liaising with both the sixth form team and fellow pupils. I also have to perform public speaking during school events such as the Academy Awards. Every school term, I chair a meeting alongside the Head Boy to discuss any issues with students from different years and how we can resolve them to make our school a better place for students, comparable to the way doctors listen to patients express their views and explain their symptoms. Like a doctor, I have been trusted with responsibilities, which I have a duty to complete. To relax, I often go to the gym, as fitness is extremely important to me and helps me to unwind. Additionally, tutoring students from Year 12 in Chemistry has helped to solidify my knowledge in a subject I enjoy.
Balancing numerous activities plays an important role in developing time management. The challenges doctors face are what make a career in medicine one of the most demanding yet fulfilling professions there is. I have learned that although doctors are continually faced with many different situations, the key to patient care manifests in a humane, conscientious professional, a position in which I strongly believe I will be able to exemplify and fully commit to. This aspiration is not just a career choice but a lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
