When you return home from an exhausting day at work, you see the cute little paws of happiness—your pet dog—waiting for you at the door to greet with cuddles, slobbery kisses, and some lovely woofs. Your pal’s face instantly lightens up with joy by the sight of you; apparently, this picture will definitely put a smile on your tired face. All the vain of your day are washed off instantly as your furry companion lick and slurp your tired face.
The bond between humans and canines is inseparable and fathomless and it dates back to antiquity. They lived in union with humans for thousands of years; while they evolve, they have developed the skill to recognize human emotions.
Dogs are emotional being just like humans and they share many similar traits with them. They can read your facial expressions, socialize, and communicate just like any other human does. Dogs can empathize with human feeling and match with the wavelengths of their owners in an instant. They can easily decipher your depressed condition and they can even smell your fears.
No wonder these compassionate beings are employed as therapy animals; therapy dogs volunteer to hospitals and nursing homes along with its handlers to bring joy in the sick and the desolated seeking companionship.
A research on therapy dogs at a pediatric cancer ward reveals the fact that therapy dogs showed attention and responded in a friendly manner when the kids talk to them or play with them. The dogs did not show any stressed behaviors like whimpering or lip licking, indicating they are not stressed while at work; in other words—they enjoy their work.
In general, dogs epitomize loyalty, unconditional love, and friendship. The real-life tale of the Japanese Akita dog Hachiko is a fine example.
The heartwarming story dates back to 1924, when his master Professor Hidesaburo Ueno bought him in Shibuya, a district in Tokyo. Ueno and Hachiko shared a strong friendship and the devoted little friend of Ueno would walk along with him to send him off to work. At dusk, he would receive him from the train station and walks back home. This had been the routine for more than a year, and things took a turn for the worse when Ueno died all of a sudden while at work.
Sadly, the faithful Hachiko would go to Shibuya station and wait there in vain to witness his master return. This happened for a decade and later the story becomes the spotlight when it was published in a Japanese newspaper. In 1935, the loyal Hachiko passed away in the streets of Shibuya and later a statue of him was erected at the same spot he would wait for his master. This heart-wrenching story would make tears roll down your cheeks and it exemplifies the cliché “Dogs are man’s best friends.”
