Introduction to Organ Donation

The process in which a person voluntarily donates their own body organs to another individual is called organ donation. In addition, legal consent is obtained from both the donor and recipient, and the procedure is performed under medical supervision. A revolution has occurred in medical science, significantly impacting this field. Organ transplantation is a useful intervention for organ failure. Literature shows that well-educated individuals possess sufficient awareness and optimism regarding organ donation. The results indicate that perception, willingness, experiences, recognition, decision-making power, values, and inspiration of individuals can influence the organ donation process (Parisa, Parsa, Malice, 2023). Organ transplantation is an effective and common intervention for saving the lives of patients at the last stage of organ failure (Martin Delgado, 2022). Organ donation has many positive aspects, including improving the quality of life and making a great contribution to research and the medical field for experiments and new inventions. It also supports both families, either donor or recipients. For donors, it fosters a sense of compassion and feelings of sympathy, and for recipients, it is a blessing during stressful periods. Furthermore, it is an important segment in the healthcare setting all over the world. It is a beneficial, cost-effective intervention and a significant welfare initiative for society (Tsubaki, 2021).

Donation of Organs and Their Harmful Effects on Society

There are two types of donation: living donation and deceased donation. It has been observed that organs are often procured from individuals with low financial status. Additionally, organ donation has become a business for trading organs for sale and purchase, due to the limited availability of donors. However, the current focus is on increasing donor availability rather than financial incentives (Delmon, 2023). According to the International Journal of Surgery, organ donation practices are affected by social attitudes, religious beliefs, and economic factors. The financial burden may be borne by individuals, families, and society without knowing the outcomes (IJOS, 2023). Healthy individuals may be exposed to certain risks after donating body organs, such as delayed recovery after surgery, surgery-related complications like infection, pain, bleeding from the surgery site, blood clotting, hernia, and, in some cases, even death. Recipients of donations also face common issues, such as organ rejection. Additionally, they encounter surgery-related complications. They must take immunosuppressive drugs to minimize the risk of rejection, but this makes them more prone to infections. In the organ donation process, individuals, families, and society encounter physical, emotional, and psychological crises. In such situations, counseling and awareness are needed to motivate them. Organ donation can occur after brain or cardiac death, but standardized recommendations and family readiness are essential to preserve organs and address the shortage. This practice is affected culturally and religiously. Some cultures and religions support organ donation, while others oppose it. For example, in the Quran, it is stated that if one individual saves the life of another, they would be saving all of humanity (Frontera, 2023).

Conclusion

In conclusion, organ donation is a noble practice within the healthcare setting, providing life to those with failed organs, whether from living or deceased donors. Achieving this requires a higher level of awareness in society and adherence to standardized guidelines without violating human rights. Workshops and seminars should be conducted at the community level, and media should be used to raise awareness about saving lives. Policies are needed to reduce the financial burden on individuals, families, and society. By enhancing understanding and support for organ donation, we can foster a more compassionate and effective healthcare system.
