Educational technology, which is also known as e-learning, instructional technology and learning technology, is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) as a platform in support of the learning process. Most people regard an e-learning course as a set of glorified Microsoft PowerPoint® slides with interesting animation, interactive navigational buttons and the e-course usually ends with a set of quiz. With higher internet speed and the global availability of the learning resources, learners can learn on the go and engage in more collaborative learning. As an educator, one should embrace the immeasurable opportunity that helps others to learn better.
Technology has offered a variety of ways to deliver learning and the learning experience that is unique for every learner. However, a trainer cannot be replaced by the technology. A trainer simply provides guidance in a class while the technology facilitates the source of the information and the learning process. In short, the benefits to learners interacting with the trainers remain.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency for educators diving into implementing technology without much consideration on the benefit gained by the learners. The cost effectiveness of some innovative technologies might not be justifiable in enhancing learning. Therefore, determining the learning outcome first and follow by identifying the technology that support the learning will make the investment worthier.
There are many new useful and creative tools that allow educators to design their course for both classroom and online teaching. Smart phones make it possible for learners in remote locations to attend courses and engage in online discussion through a mobile app. However, the rapid advancement of technology has made it challenging for educators to learn the new intriguing tools. Study has indicated that using technology with adult learners is an effective teaching modality, especially if that technology gives learners more control over their learning and helps them use a variety of learning styles. Educators are constantly looking for ways to improve learner’s learning experience in their classrooms. However, little is known about the trainer’s perspectives and experiences in using a specific technology such as learning management system, learner response system on mobile apps or social media for example that affects their teaching. Such findings would be welcomed by researchers, trainers, and administrators alike and would likely be well received at teacher conferences.
