As I embarked on my journey to medical school, I quickly learned that embracing diversity goes beyond race and ethnicity; it encompasses different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. The patients we serve come from various walks of life, each with unique challenges and needs. Thus, understanding these differences is crucial for providing compassionate and effective care.

My Background: A Tapestry of Cultures

I grew up in a multicultural environment where my family celebrated various traditions, languages, and cuisines. My parents immigrated from different countries—my mother from India and my father from Mexico—bringing their rich heritages into our household. This blend of cultures shaped my worldview and instilled in me a deep appreciation for diversity.

From an early age, I was exposed to diverse health practices rooted in my family's cultural beliefs. For instance, Ayurveda played a significant role in my mother's approach to wellness while traditional Mexican remedies were prevalent in my father's family. These experiences sparked my curiosity about medicine's intersection with culture.

During high school, I volunteered at local community clinics serving underserved populations. This experience was transformative—it opened my eyes to the disparities within the healthcare system. Many patients faced language barriers or lacked access to necessary resources, which often hindered their ability to receive proper care.
