English 101, the introductory course in college writing, has been a journey of self-discovery and growth as a writer. As a first-year college student, I was initially apprehensive about the demands of this course. However, over the past semester, I have learned important lessons about effective communication, critical thinking, research, and writing. This final reflection essay will discuss the most significant aspects of my English 101 experience, including the challenges, successes, and skills I acquired.
The first challenge that I encountered in English 101 was improving my grammar and sentence structure. I realized that my writing lacked coherence, clarity, and precision, which made it difficult for readers to understand my ideas. To overcome this obstacle, I had to work on basic writing skills, such as sentence structure, punctuation, and verb tense consistency. I practiced writing basic sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and learned how to avoid common errors, such as run-on sentences and sentence fragments.
Another significant challenge was learning how to source and incorporate research into my writing effectively. Prior to this course, I had never conducted research or used sources in a paper, so I found this to be a daunting task. However, through practice and guidance from my professor, I learned how to conduct research, evaluate sources, and incorporate them into my writing ethically and credibly.
Despite encountering some daunting challenges in English 101, I have also had many successes throughout the course. One of my biggest successes has been improving my writing skills. I am now able to construct sentences that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct. Additionally, I have learned how to use research to support my ideas and arguments, and I am now confident in my ability to persuade and inform my readers through writing.
Another success in this class was the completion of my research paper, which was an analysis of the effects of social media on mental health. This was an extremely challenging task since it required extensive research and critical thinking. However, with guidance and feedback from my professor and peers, I was able to produce a quality research paper that I am proud of.
Throughout the course of English 101, I have acquired a wide range of skills that I know will serve me well in my academic and professional life. Firstly, I have improved my critical reading skills, allowing me to read and analyze texts more effectively. I have learned to identify and evaluate arguments, understand the author's purpose, and make connections between texts.
Additionally, I have learned how to communicate my ideas effectively through various forms of writing, including narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and research-based writing. Lastly, I have developed my research skills through locating, evaluating, and using sources in my papers.
English 101 has played a critical role in my development as a writer and critical thinker. Through the challenges, successes, and skills acquired, I have acquired confidence in my writing ability and a deeper understanding of the importance of effective communication. I will continue to apply these skills in my future academic and professional endeavors and strive to learn more in the field of writing and communication.
