Fretting over whether their children obtain the necessary public and social skills to survive in today’s world, parents fear that social media has consumed their teenager’s life to the point of no return. Little do the parents know that social media provides just as many if not more beneficial qualities than harmful ones for the teenager’s views on certain ideas. The Documentary called “Generation Like” proves social media may not only be reaching teens but also groups that appeal to a wide variety of people in little amounts of time. Aside from the its addicting qualities, social media presents a wide variety of skills that help enhance not just the teenager’s social and educational skills but the marketing strategies businesses may use to further advance the company’s success.
In today’s world, many teenagers feel stressed about finding their own way of expressing themselves. Social media provides an outlet for teens that feel troubled sometimes. The video uses an example of a teen who wants to express her feelings for her favorite series, Hunger Games. She utilizes Twitter to “re-tweet” posts about the Hunger Games in order to publicize the Hunger Games franchise as well as to express herself as the number one fan to anyone who views the post. The teenager states that having this kind of publicity lets people know exactly what kind person she wants to become and that using Twitter allows for that easy access to publicize.
Another system that generated to express one’s own feelings toward a certain idea or product was the “like” system. People in today’s world are now able to express their own views or appreciation for something with just a press of a button. In fact many businesses utilize this function to advertise their company or product to a favorable sample of consumers because the company knows that this person liked the product on Facebook and therefore is more likely to buy the product. The Documentary explains how the Oreo Company was able to access its target audience much easier by grouping everyone that liked Oreos, so only more products were shown to those people. Taco Bell has also appealed to many of its viewer by associating the famous YouTuber, Tyler Oakley, with Taco Bell foods. Teens like Oakley are able to establish their own connections and associations for their future when using social media while also allowing both of these companies to expand their businesses efficiently by utilizing social media to directly access their target audience.
Many of the older generations claim that kids these days spend way too much time on electronics but what they do on those networking sites may have huge impacts on the teen’s social and potential businesses relationships. Although social media can take time away from important daily activities, it can easily be made up for when proposing the potential benefits for the individual’s or company’s future.
