Success is a concept that has been debated and defined in various ways for centuries. Some view success as achieving material wealth or status, while others see it as finding personal fulfillment and happiness. However, success should be viewed as a subjective concept that includes achieving goals, personal fulfillment, and making a positive impact on others.
One common way to define success is by setting and accomplishing goals. Goals can be career-oriented, academic, personal, or social, among others. The achievement of these goals leads to a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. According to research, having specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals tends to lead to better performance and productivity (Locke & Latham, 2006).For instance, a student could set a goal of getting straight As in their classes for a semester or getting an internship in their desired field of study. When they accomplish their goal, they can feel proud and motivated to set new goals and work towards them.
Success can also be seen as finding personal fulfillment or happiness. However, fulfillment is subjective and varies from person to person. It is essential to recognize that success is not only about external achievements but also about finding meaning and purpose in life.Individuals find fulfillment in different aspects of life, such as relationships, hobbies, and self-improvement, among others. For example, someone may find fulfillment in their career as a teacher because they feel they are making a positive impact on their students' lives. Another person may find fulfillment in their hobbies, such as painting or playing a musical instrument.
Success can also be seen as making a difference in the lives of others or society as a whole. Successful individuals often contribute to their community or help others achieve their goals. By making a positive impact on others, individuals create a legacy beyond themselves. Philanthropists, activists, or leaders understand that being successful is not only about personal achievement but also about creating a better world for others. For instance, Bill Gates and Melinda Gates have made significant contributions to global health and education through their foundation. Their goal is to help reduce poverty and improve people's lives around the world. They represent an example of how success can be defined by making the world a better place for others.
There is a narrow definition of success, which is based solely on material wealth or societal status. However, this view is limited and fails to capture the essence of success. Wealth and status are not necessarily correlated with happiness or fulfillment.People who pursue success only through this narrow lens might find themselves in a never-ending cycle of craving for more wealth and status. This approach to success often leads to burnout, anxiety, and depression. Therefore, it is important to recognize that success is not the same as money, power, or fame.
In summary, success should be defined as a subjective concept that includes achieving goals, personal fulfillment, and making a positive impact on others. The narrow definition of success that is based solely on material wealth or societal status is limited and fails to capture the true essence of success. A more holistic approach to success is necessary; one that focuses on personal fulfillment, meaningful relationships, and creating a positive impact on the world around us.As a college student, it is important to set SMART goals, find fulfillment in academic and personal pursuits, and seek opportunities to make a positive impact in our community. Ultimately, success should be viewed as a personal journey that varies from person to person."Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." - Albert Schweitzer.
