Stephen Hawking is the most famous living scientist. He was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. Both of his parents, Frank and Isobel Hawking attended University of Oxford, where Frank studied medicine and Isobel studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Stephen Hawking is well known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology, general relativity and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes. He is theoretical physicist and astronomer. Currently, he works at the University of Cambridge as a physics professor and is still collecting awards attributed to his works.
Hawking attended St Albans School but he was not an outstanding student, rather he was more interested in what happened outside the classroom. He spent his time and energy in inventing new things. As he grew older, against his father’s wishes, he made plans to pursue mathematics as his major. But at the time, it was not possible to study mathematics so he had to take up physics and chemistry instead. He began his university education at the age of 17. While at Oxford he became increasingly interested in physics (the study of matter and energy), eventually graduating with first class honours in physics. He went on to Cambridge to research cosmology, the study of the universe as a whole. In early 1963, Hawking discovered that he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It meant that the part of his nervous system that was responsible for muscle control was shutting down.
According to the doctors, he only had another two years to live. For that reason, Hawking started concentrating fully on his research work. He is now over 70 and he is still alive and still working.Over the years, Stephen Hawking has written or co-written a total of 15 books. “A Brief History of Time” is the most well-known.Since its publication, it has sold millions of copies worldwide and been translated into more than 40 languages.
