Many times, I’ve found myself thinking about my role in the world: my purpose. And in order to figure it out, I have to truly ask myself who am I and what really sparks my inner fire. Once I discover the answer to these, I’ll be able to relate to my community and help others find their path. As a 16-year-old girl, I still have a lot of time to figure my life out, but if I don't know who I am, finding my sense in this world will be a challenge.
I consider that the key to understanding myself is to be an active member of my community: to be involved with others as well as connecting to their thoughts and feelings. Doing so brings me inspiration and it fulfills my need for purpose in life.
I am a people's person; I am intrigued by human behavior, which makes me observative and capable of perceiving details with more depth. This has led me to discover my passion for acting. Acting is all about observing the world around me, finding patterns and transforming them in my own language to speak to my heart. It is a platform that allows me to experience what it truly means to be human. I have been involved in acting classes for five years, but last year I had to quit because I didn't have enough time. Since then, I’ve felt the need to jump onto a stage and act my lungs out because performing is what makes me reconnect to my emotions; it lights up my taste for life. By attending to NSLC, (in particular the acting program) not only will I have the time of my life, but I will also be able to explore myself and the things I can bring afloat to inspire others.
Being 2,551 miles away from my country, Colombia, is not easy, but I will be exposed to other cultures that will teach me a lot about life through different eyes. I really enjoy connecting with people from all over the world; I'm friendly and therefore create special bonds with anybody. Here in Cali, I have volunteered for many social service programs where I have had the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds who always teach me something new about myself and challenge me to come out of my comfort zone. Most of the time I work with underprivileged kids, and I really need to take the position of a leader to make the activities work. It is a challenge because it carries a lot of responsibility, but at the end, seeing them smile and forgetting about their background for even a minute is very rewarding.
By attending to NSLC, I'm sure that more of my leadership qualities will unveil themselves. I will grow as a person, learn from others, but most importantly understand my role in this world as a leader who is concerned about her community and the people in it.
