The movie ‘Freedom Writers’ talks about the struggle of an inexperienced teacher named Mrs. Erin Gruwell as she took up the challenge of teaching English to the students at Woodrow Wilson High School where lot of tensions (discrimination, racism, injustice system, gang wars, violence) exist between them. As Mrs. Gruwell tries to connect and interact with her class, I realized the daily efforts, problems and sacrifices faced by the teachers.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Many teenagers today or students including myself, may think that a teacher’s job is an easy one but upon seeing the movie, Mrs. Gruwell shows how she disciplined her students to the extent that she sacrificed her own personal life for them. She was very passionate in teaching that she is willing to pull out her own money, double her working hours, be disrespected and belittled by the department head just to educate her class. With these little things, she changed the students’ lives for better. I realize that sometimes as a student we miss out the importance of a teacher in our lives. We sometimes get irritated at them for giving us hard time in exams, pile of readings and assignments but this all for the desire of educating us. I learned that as a teacher you don’t just talk and write but rather plan everyday how you help the students grow mentally and emotionally.

Teachers get tired too, they find rest if they see us succeed despite our weaknesses, so with this I will double my efforts in my study for their happiness also. Now, I appreciate their existence for helping me to be better equipped in life. In Mrs. Gruwell’s personal struggle, I learned that even though people fail you (her husband that filed a divorce) you will always find a reason to recover and move on. Miep Gies said to the students in the movie, “But even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room.” which made me believe that change happens to someone who is willing to take action and when someone looks beyond a person’s imperfection, focusing only on their potential. This is what Mrs. Gruwell did and we all must do because sometimes all we need is someone who see the good in us that will drive us to change for better. In the students’ life stories, I learned something from Eva who choose justice and truth over loyalty and relationship regarding the murder in a convenient store where his boyfriend got someone killed and turn the blame to someone else who is innocent.

Eva sacrifice her relationship with her friends, boyfriend and father for the truth. I, myself, always choose relationship over the truth because I don’t want to be left out or broke someone else trust, but I learned that truth will always set you free. It may not be comfortable at first, eventually you’ll have the reason to be strong and face the challenge. Another is the story of Marcus who found his way back home and to his mother, I admired him for letting go of his pride for his family and happiness which made me choose heart over pride. The class in general helped me to understand that everyone is facing a struggle or problem in their lives, I must not judge them also because I’m not the only one struggling instead help them in different ways. We are all born with different color and races, but this didn’t degrade us for who we are. There are no superior or inferiors, we are all humans and I must respect everyone including myself for being born like this. No discrimination must be practice at all cost.

Lastly, a person may always point out your wrongdoing or mistakes in the past, but this will not define your future. I must forget what lies behind and focus on what is ahead. There’s always a beginning to someone who sees hope, and we must not give up on people that easily. In the movie’s ending, Mrs. Gruwell fought for what she wants and gain it, the students graduated despite their circumstances, this motivate me to continue what I’ve started.
