In this course I have understand the sex and gender reading of discussion presented in class. Moreover, the cross-cultural element of sex and gender allowed me to make connections to my preceding beliefs about gender and human sexuality. For purpose of this essay I would like to make my understanding of women and men in different cultures of their gender and sexuality and how this affects the diversity of work and proceeding of marriage and families.
Understanding gender and human sexuality and the function and consequences of gender role is crucial because it lets in one to understand themselves and to others. Gender roles informs one how to act as both a character of their cultures. In reality, many people question whether they are sufficiently female or male. Gender roles it additionally pertains to sexual identity development. Sexual identity is observed in adulthood when one identifies with a sexual identity such as: heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Gender roles stereotypes and their effects on relationship will be discussed.
Sexuality affects people through how they feel and express themselves. People express sexuality in wider image, where as some people do not experience sex at all. The sexuality of a person can get prompted via culture, society, family, religion, studies and friends. Everyone has different thought and attraction towards sexuality. Not as straight, gay or lesbian, some people attracted to one same sex person. While other attracted to every other individual. Sexuality can be defining in many ways as sexual feeling and interaction. CSA Child Sexual Abuse is defining that the action is inflicted or to be tolerated by child against their own wish. Sometime child cannot make decision according to their physical, emotional, mental, and verbal inferiority. It is different from another animals’ sexuality. Humans are generally not involved in producing more population. They just want to have sex that’s lead to morality of peoples thinking of reproduction. My thinking of I am male, or female will make a difference development of my own sexuality. Sexuality is major part of our appearance, no matter if are known or not.
I was born in India, in a Traditional family where religious values play a strict major role in children’s education. Ever since I was a little boy, and my dad used to teach me how he works, and he do. Even since my sister was a little girl, dressed up in a pink dress, she thought to be feminine, was asked to always help in cooking, cleaning and housework. Even though I have a different aspect of understanding of sex and gender, I sill admire some aspects how my parents raised me. When I was transfer to Canada in the age of 18. Coming from most conservative society to most liberal city. I started understanding the viewpoint of gender and human sexuality in more details. My previous understanding that females are different from males only biologically have emerged. I was able to understand that we are socialized into gendered roles of who we are. The reason why, is that socialized roles as well as the nation of sexual identity in India is shaped in another way by means of own family, society and government. So gender roles and sexuality is classified by means of the society in this type of way, that it conforms to the standards. Unfortunately, and deviation from the requirements is considered as problem. Hence men and women are imposed particularly roles and obligation that to be followed. Boy are predictable to complete their army education or anything else, but for girls get a good grade, complete education and stay home. Whereas no matter what boys do, fuck around with girls, goes on a private party to a destination for 10 days. Whereas girls are not even allowed to get out of their house without a family member. This is the reasons in most family in India, that their own daughter tries to run away from their family. Even some girls can’t control their emotion and hangout with few boys a night, but unfortunately, they get caught and they committee suicide after. Whereas all reciprocal for boys. After realizing everything I treat my family very well, make them understand everything. Even though I have lost my cousin sister.
The females are expected to get married in their twenties with someone of opposite sex, have babies, take over the house duties that’s all. Before that as I was more into social things, I acknowledge that women in different countries get married in their thirties after setting up their career with their own life decision. They have right to choose their partner independently without being judge by their society. This truth proves the idea that society has one of a expectation from the men’s as well women’s.
Another observation that I would like to make is the real example of my life, I have two friends who loved each other a lot, and even their family used to know this. they were in a relation for almost 2-3 years. Whereas one day they realize to have sex with each other, so on the first day of their sex, they took some pictures. After someday a girl’s parents found out some pictures in her phone. They were shocked and in their anger of respect they lost their tempered and started beating her child crazily, which was almost a murdered, just for not losing their respect in community they gave her the poison to death. They fell no mercy at that time. When people were asking the reason for her death, they conclude that because she failed in her board exam, she committed suicide. As it was a suicide case, police did a forensic test which found out that a girl was beaten up badly and there was a poison in her body. After all their parents were in the jail for killing her own child. But they did not get to killed in jail, because of shit Indian government. After all the boy who loved her was roaming freely, and traveling the world, just because he is boy, court conclude everything’s that it was a girl fault. She wanted a fun so slept with a boy. In India money says everything., no matter if it is case of robbery. I never understand the gender discrimination in India. If boys can drive, work, have fun, study, live life the way they want, then why can’t a girl? Sorry to say that but not let my sister’s future down I have come Canada so that after some years I can call my family here, in a multicultural country Canada, where there is no discrimination in religion, gender and quality. I was against these things in India, but I could not stand by my own, just because of shit government of India.
If we talk about the current situation in India, the government has passed a bill of citizen amendment bill, where student were just protesting against it, all the boys where hardly beaten up by police, but they did not touch the girls, even though they were the part of this. I would never say that India is a democratic country.
I have gone somewhere else apart from the topic Gender and Human Sexuality. But somewhere they are the best examples where I understood everything in my life.
There are 4 types of gender roles stereotypes. First is personal traits. Male gender consists of precise persona trends. For women gender role stereotypes consist of Passivity, compliance, bodily beauty, and being a mom. Second stereotypes of domestic behaviour. Males are regarded taking care of household bills, rents and maintenance, at the same time as females are regarded for taking care of kids. The last category of gender role stereotypes is physical appearance. Men’s are expected to be strong, huge shoulders and tall and women are small and sleek.
Gender roles stereotypes create sexual script for both males and females. This teaches how to behave in their relationship. Sexual script teaches them how to participate in sexual scene.
I really appreciated the opportunity to participate in reflection papers. The fact they encourage student to use their life experience examples and relate them to the material being taught in the course and it was so helpful in understanding and retaining the information being taught.
In my opinion, sex and gender are interpreted differently across the cultures, and the expectation of the society vary. Moreover, the reality of gender and sex in different cultures affects how people view the expectation of marriage and gender roles. I would like to see the attitude and behaviour more like my own looking models. I think if this method of standard mentioned or even enforced culturally by another gender stereotypes would to better to see in male sex is for men to become nurturers. The last behaviour I would like to see is that the male should be more caretaker for children. This will be benefit for women to seek more opportunities in the workplace.
