A music video is a short film that incorporates a melody with symbolism, and is created for limited time or aesthetic purpose. The modern music videos are essentially made and used as an advertising gadget to increase the sales and streaming for music recordings. Media and gender eludes the connection among the media and gender, and how sexual orientation is spoken to media stages. In the recent years, many artists tend to use gender and sexual representation in their music videos to convey a message out to the audience. Music video also plays a major role for an artist’s song, because it can help portray the meaning behind of a song or the music video itself express how the artist feel about that particular song.
There are gender and sexual representation available in one of my favourite music video, which is “God is a woman” by Ariana Grande. “God is a woman” is one of the best music video Ariana Grande had ever produce. It has received praise and backlash from the media, because of how Ariana Grande portray the meaning in “God is a woman” music video. However, alluding to the Christian God in female instead of male terms has for quite some time been considered by numerous individuals to be fringe profane. “God is a woman” music video has portrayed women in the most empowering way yet. “God is a woman” music video is filled with religious and feminist imagery, every scene of the music video have a significant message passed to the audience.
The first scene of “God is a woman” started off with Ariana Grande being in the center of the galaxy, meaning that woman is a the center of the universe, like God or the sun. Woman is the center of the universe because without women there will not have the next generation of most of the living things. Don’t you not realize we tend to call our earth mother earth too? The following scene where Ariana Grande floating in a muddy paint that looks like female reproductive organ. This scene also meant she is in the middle of the womb where all of us are from our mother’s womb. The scene after this shows man showing hatred towards Ariana Grande with foul or explicit words like slut, b*tch, fake, annoying, stupid and so on, while Ariana Grande stays unbothered. This scene implies that women face criticism like this daily from the society but we still have to stay strong and face the criticism no matter what, because that’s how we are brought up.
Besides that, there are one of the scene where Ariana Grande dressed like what gives off an impression of a female rendition of Thor from Avengers, finish with a hammer for a sledge while reciting the quote from “Pulp Fiction’. The voice-over where she recites the quotes from “Pulp Fiction” are very familiar, where we know her as the queen of pop, Madonna. The quotes where she recites from “Pulp Fiction” were also taken from the bible verse, Ezekiel 25:17. From the quote, she also changed the term “brothers” to “sisters” to send an empowering message to all the female. There is more unique imagery from the following scene after Ariana Grande recites the quote, where she stands inside two legs, wide open. This scene indicates a God, sits inside the place of all creation, a crotch.
