If my friend came to me for advice on whether or not they should enroll their daughter in a local club for gymnastics with intensive training, my answer would be yes, it is a possibility. She could benefit in the long run, but he should be aware of everything that it will require as well as the risks involved. Firstly, I would reiterate that he would be paying annual fees along with competition fees and possible miscellaneous costs, so he would need to have the financial means to consistently keep up with the payments. This would require that he has a stable job with a stable income, as well as a flexible budget for unexpected spending in regards to her training.
With intensive training and competitions, it would require an availability and dedication of many hours. This means that the entire family has to be committed to making the home life work with her schedule as well as receiving emotional support from her family. I would also advise my friend that he should ensure that his daughter understands the time commitment for herself as well. He should warn her that with an intensive sport, she will have to be willing to prioritize her training, which may mean sacrificing normal activities. This is particularly important for a youth in sport because they are heavily influenced by their families. Along with intensive training and long hours comes an increase in potential injury. My friend would need medical healthcare for his child and a stable income comes into play again as he would need to cover possible medical costs depending on his healthcare coverage and policy. Another issue to consider is that children are impressionable and it is important that they are active in a positive environment. If she wants to pursue a professional career in gymnastics, it is important that she is taught ambition and hard work without being pushed too hard. It is imperative that she has support from her family and peers in case of setbacks which will come with any sport. An experience with a coach as well as an overly competitive atmosphere can make or break a child's decision to continue with sports throughout their life. Essentially, do not forget to assure her no matter what her intentions are with the sport of gymnastics, that she should be enjoying herself.
With all of these potential issues and benefits in mind, the most important advice I could give my friend is to make sure that this is something that his daughter desires. Again supporting her is essential in case the training becomes too intense and to avoid putting his own desires and ambitions onto her. There are many examples of athletes in the world who have spiraled after being excessively pushed to train and compete at a young age. As long as my friend has the financial and emotional means to support his daughter, an intensive local gymnastics club can be beneficial if this is a sport she desires to participate in.
