Big Data and Data mining and its Value to Healthcare

In any healthcare institution, the most critical process is gathering, close examining, and leveraging of consumer and patient data which appears complex since the clinical data involved is too vast to be understood by conventional means of data processing. This big data undergoes processing by sophisticated machine learning algorithms and data scientists. Big data is influential in healthcare due to the major shifts in the industry, the vast amount of data available, growing healthcare costs, and high consumer demand (Raghupathi 2014). Therefore, big data enables healthcare systems to turn these challenges into opportunities by providing customized patient journeys and quality care. To achieve this, the use of flexible, easy and expandable information technology infrastructure should be enabled to makes the data analyzable.

Data mining, on the other hand, is the process through which big data is examined and evaluated to discover trends and use of these patterns to foretell the probability of future occurrences. An interesting feature of big data concerning healthcare is the estimation of the expected number of patients by the use of automated machines and big data. An application is established and customized to enable shift administrators in hospitals to perfectly envisage the number of doctors required to serve the patients efficiently, thus resulting to a reduction in mortality rate due to the unavailability of a doctor in the most critical moments, hence adding value to the healthcare institution

Section Two:

The concept of Continuity Planning and Disaster Preparedness

Business continuity planning is the process that involves generating a scheme of prevention and rescue from impending threats to a company. This planning ensures that staff remains equipped in situations of any future happening, and assets are safeguarded and can function quickly in the event of a disaster. The process entails defining any risks that can influence a company’s operations and determining how those risks will affect the company. After that, safeguards and strategy procedures undergo testing and implementation to mitigate the risks. Lastly, the processes and procedures are continuously reviewed and updated to ensure the success of the plan.

As the investment manager in Consolidated Bank Limited, I will recommend, initiate and help execute an emergency preparedness plan that will aid in the occurrence of any potential threat. In achieving this, there must be full support from the top management. After understanding the threats and potential costs involved, I will effectively take action in creating the emergency preparedness action by instilling the below steps:

  • Stage one– Create a cross-functional team to maintain company-wide full cooperation. Define clearly the roles and responsibilities of each team member.
  • Stage 2– Create a plan of action. This strategy needs introduction and implementation to determine how the bank will respond to any potential disaster.
  • Stage 3– Instruct all workers to understand what to do while doing their daily duties. Training exercises will give you an idea of what and what is not functioning. I will also look at the project as a specific report and regularly update it as the rules and regulations are likely to change.
  • Stage 4– Track the potential and immediate threats that may arise to respond accordingly and faster as the need arises.

Section Three:

Use of Informatics in Healthcare Education of Nursing Students (Selected Article: The Role of Nursing Informatics on Promoting Quality of Health Care and the Need for Appropriate Education by Asieh Darvish, published 2014 June 24).

The article explains that engineering use plays a significant role in the practice of health and nursing. Therefore, it is important to research the role played by nurses in society and to highlight the need for appropriate ICT informational packages that should be combined with the rebellion developments in technology. The analysis used involved an extensive search of the literature in repositories. The measures used to pick lectures focused entirely on nursing informatics and the importance of skill in the successful use of information systems in all areas of the medical career.

The key components of the introduction of healthcare information science are also addressed through a thorough analysis of new technologies such as health care marketing, advanced systems, internet, and network (Darvish et al., 2014). Given the nature and advancement of the modern age, all types of nurses need to undergo the requisite IT training. Because of the accelerated technological advances to potentially take account of computer technology in healthcare results and the cost of medical care and inspire nursing staff; it is suggested that brief-term and lengthy-term focused programs should emphasize on four specific groups: research, job, intern, senior undergraduate and graduate doctorate. The outcome of this survey is obligated to support the development of initiatives for instructional suppliers.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Use of Technology by Nursing Students

Advantages

Better Communication Leading to Enhanced Patient safety: One of the greatest benefits of medical innovation is that software makes interacting with patients easier for nurses. For instance, when a client has a minor medical problem such as a burn or a blister, they can use apps to chat with a nurse or doctor on camera and talk one on one without getting to see each other in person. This aspect encourages the nurse and client to talk openly with each other, so all questions and advice can be shared and offered.

Smarter Learning: Tech is reshaping the study of nursing. Teachers can connect with their students in new ways with the help of technology, while at the same time equipping them with high-quality content, resources, and customized teaching workouts. Whether taking online or in-person nursing education, technology is revolutionizing the classroom by making communications, research, and resources more manageable. Additionally, nursing students now have access to interesting new tools such as live and interactive demos, apps, study manuals, textbooks, virtual classes, mannequins for electronic learning, and more.

Enhanced healthcare: Hundreds of advances in technology have changed the face of health care and treatment of patients over the decades (Robinson and Dearmon 2013). The nursing staff is not only able to communicate directly to their clients, but the internet has made therapy easier than ever. These devices such as digital IV monitoring, mobile ventilators, hands-free interaction solutions, and addiction control technology, are a few of the technology innovations that have improved performance, diagnosis, and nursing care.

Generally, Kept Documentation: Remote record-keeping without equipment is one of the most dangerous things in health care. If the client's statistics and health information are written physically and kept in simple formats such as in directory and file cabinets or electronic databases, the threat is the same: information may be misplaced, destroyed, hacked, or prone to time issues such as rustling paper, creased or deteriorating handwriting, stains rips, etc. Patient records allow medical practitioners to keep a simple and accurate track of patient stats and data, resulting in fewer medical mistakes and decent quality clinical care. Information is securely and easily accessible. Data is stored safely and easily accessible, making it easy to identify certain documents, trends of interest and more.

Disadvantages

Established Internet Access: A major disadvantage of nursing technology is that certain patients may not be competent regarding technological advancements. Many patients might not have cell phones or access to the internet, rendering the applications and video calls useless. Although it may not be a total drawback, nurses and other healthcare professionals need to take into account when using software to change patient safety and communications radically.

Faulty Machinery: When technology becomes malfunction able, it becomes one of the greatest software complications. Technology can be helpful and an effective way of making life more enjoyable, but if it crashes, it can waste the entire day. It refers in particular, to companies that rely on software for virtually all their operations. With this in mind, you need to make sure that you have someone available and usable to address any technical issues that may happen, as well as a means of delivering patient care.

At the Server / Control Mercy: Another problem for nursing technology, both in the health care facility and in the teaching space, is being at the behest of the network and power server. If either of these apparatus goes down because of conditions, network issues, or natural disasters, you will likely do nothing. In a nursing schoolroom situation and the hospital, this would be predominantly difficult if models and digital devices are used to perform video calls or machine-requiring procedures.

In conclusion, technology does have its pluses and minuses; however, the fact of the matter is that it makes our job simpler. The thing to remember is that in tandem with engineering, we need to use our human understanding and creativity for the optimal results. Unless clinicians consider this, there is no idea how far and large the sector may be growing. Therefore, in teaching student nurses, ICT can be seen as a feasible resource in increasing knowledge and skill in the healthcare profession.
