Discussion on The Theme of Homosexuality and Religion

These days, people love to engage their mind debating about controversial topics and express their perspectives on the issue. One arguably controversial topic is "Gay Marriage"; it is debated so often because of the different views behind it.

Gay marriage is defined as marriage between partners of the same sex. There are laws which discriminate this type of people in this society and only 13% of countries in the world allow same sex marriage. We have to take into consideration that religion is a very important factor because this is what provokes the non-supporters of the LGBTQ community to give their statements for what it is. But besides all of these it comes down to the right ethics, whether the person believes if under that situation what they are doing is right or wrong. There is an estimated of 10% of the population who are bisexual.

Religion is one of the biggest aspects that restraint what society thinks of gay marriage. In the bible, it says that the Bible condemns sexual activity that is not between a husband and wife, whether it is homosexual or heterosexual conduct. In 2012,in the United States a gay couple had approached a bakery called ‘masterpiece cake’ to make a request for their wedding cake but the baker refused to make them a cake because they were homosexual, being offended the couple decided to take this matter to the court.

Nowadays, we are living in a world where religion has a lot of perspectives and views on the different dilemmas in the society. Jack Phillips, the Colorado baker that owns ‘Masterpiece Cake’ said that he should not be forced to use his talents to convey a message of support for same-sex marriage. Phillips has recalled saying what he thought of it at that precise moment when he encountered the gay couple in his bakery, Phillip stated, "I'll make you birthday cakes, shower cakes, cookies, brownies, but I just can't make a cake for a same-sex wedding". Phillips argued that two parts of the First Amendment - its protections for free speech and the free exercise of religion - overrode a Colorado anti-discrimination law and allowed him to refuse to create a custom wedding cake. He says it if not fair to be discriminated by the law just because he is simply following his religious views.

Every American should be free to choose which art they will create and which art they won’t create without fear of being unjustly punished by the government stated by the baker to a group of local supporters. Phillips still stoutly defends his 2012 rebuff of Mullins and Craig, saying he offered to sell them virtually any of his baked goods except a custom cake for their wedding.

Within Singapore, Gay marriage has been illegal for many decades, because Singapore is a secured and diverse country which is a home to many religions. The couple has issued statements for the actions of the baker and has expressed what they felt about it. Charlie Craig and David Mullins express that businesses open to the public should not be allowed to discriminate against gay men and lesbians. When hearing to what the baker had to say over the request for a wedding cake, the couple states that they had felt degraded and mortified which is what influenced them to file discrimination charges. Mullins said, "There was horrible pregnant pause and "It was publicly humiliating and it was painful". Charlie Craig said he felt ashamed and furious with the baker, "This case is not about a cake. It’s not about a baker". Craig says: "It’s about us being able to be free to be treated equally in the public realm". The couple did not have the slightest thought that they would land up in the Supreme Court five years later and knew that they had to relive the pain over and over again.

By society, the question remains if the couple had followed ethics by following the Colorado’s laws and if it was right to feel degraded and to discriminate the baker from their perspective? Are they non-believers? If not, is it right by faith to go against the word of God?
