Second Language

Language is one of the best inventions of humanity. It goes back to the prehistoric times with the use of symbols and art. Nowadays, language is expressed through sounds and symbols in order to have clear and successful communication with all the people. One of the best ways to gain success in the 21st century is by learning a second language. More and more Americans realize that English is not the most important language, and Spanish and Mandarin are becoming widely spoken around U.S. Not only does being bilingual increase global understanding, it also improves employment potential and makes international traveling a breeze.

Knowing a second language increases your cultural awareness and allows you to communicate with people all over the world. This increases a better communication level with people of different nationalities and religions. This is especially important with immigration rates at an all time high. Lack of knowledge with international cultures can lead to misunderstandings and mistrust. In major cases, even military confrontation. For the survival of a global community, language abilities are necessary to keep the world at peace.

Frequently, people tend to apply themselves in job openings in which they need no language skill but soon realize that they are missing out on opportunities for promotion, or jobs abroad, due to the lack of their second language. More and more businesses are choosing their employees based on their language skills, as well as their interests in working abroad. These days, many U.S. companies are taking their operations to the global level. For example, it is very beneficial for a successful manager to know Mandarin when working with Asian countries. Whether you’re a new doctor learning a way to communicate with more of your patients, or a customer service representative learning to solve more customer problems and giving them a quicker solution, expanding your language skills will help you boost your career.

Traveling with a family or in a study abroad program can provide many opportunities to put a language skill to a test. Speaking the language will help you navigate more easily in foreign countries. Asking locals and other travelers for help or directions, in general, will enhance your overall experience when you can communicate with a larger group of people. In addition, communicating with people from other cultures opens up your mind and in some cases, helps you see different cultures in a different perspective.

Some might say that learning a new language is difficult and time consuming, however, the benefits are obvious. Not only are you improving your native language by sharpening your speaking and writing skills, you are also improving your memory by strengthening your mental muscle. Even if it seems difficult at first, there are many tools to help you along the journey of learning a new language. Rosetta Stone, along with various apps on smartphones and tablets, make it fun and easy for beginners to get a head start in achieving their goal.
