In the novel , 1984, George Orwell depicts the bleak totalitarian future he envisioned would happen to the world in 1984. In this future, the government is involved in every aspect of a person's life and can monitor them whenever they want thanks to the telescreens installed in all homes and buildings. There is no secret in this society except the thoughts in your head but you might be reported to the Thought Police for traitorous thoughts against Big Brother and Ingsoc. Winston , the protagonist, works in the Ministry of Truth where he rewrites all literature and media that is proven wrong by something that happens so that Ingsoc is always right. He even sometimes has to “unperson” someone which is to erase all records that they existed and write it as if someone else that did it.
With records being updated to be digital or on microfiche film we have the past in ways that we’ve never had them before. With this being done poses the question, “Does this increase the possibility that the record of the past will be changed or lost?” Most will say that it does pose the possibility that things can be changed. Some will say that it would not because if they are official documents that they can not be changed. That is the issue, they could have already been changed before anyone found them. This can be very scary to some that want to make sure that artifacts and documents stay as they were when they came to be from the people and such that made them.
One thing that some might wonder is that is it possible that some people will end up with a job like Winston. Trying to predict what will happen in the future is very hard to do. People that wrote the movie Back to the Future II in 1989 tried to predict what 2015 would be like. They predict we would have holograms, hoverboards, and self tying shoes. These obviously are not things we have but this is exactly why trying to predict what will happen is very bad to do because the future might not add up to what was thought. This is why trying to figure out what jobs is bad. People never thought that the internet or solar power would be as big business as they are now. So I do not believe that people in the future will have this job.
It is important to know what the past was like because we can learn from it and hopefully not repeat what the people of the past did. Along with this we can learn what people did and see how cultures changed and evolved over the millenia to what they are now or what they were before they collapsed or disappeared. This is important to understand why we do the things we do as cultures or to explain certain culture specific social cues. If the past was erased, we could not have learned what we have in the past few centuries.
So this is why it is very important to preserve the past that we know and to make sure that it is known to future what the past was like. This is something that needs to happen because the future will rely on what is happening now for us but in the past for them. Whatever happens to us will affect them as much as it affects us. The future will need what we do to help them by using what we do to further the progress of the human race.
