Community centers with positive activities can effectively prevent teenagers from becoming graffitists. One notable example is the Non-Toxic Teen Center located in Chicago. Its purpose is to provide teenagers with a safe and positive environment where they can spend their time constructively, thus steering them away from potential trouble. According to Stacy Vogel (2008), "Teens gather around four pool tables, an air hockey table, a foosball table and musical instruments available for their use. A smaller room offers a snack bar and board games" (para. 9). When teenagers have access to such engaging and entertaining activities, the likelihood of them resorting to graffiti significantly decreases. Providing a variety of activities not only keeps them occupied but also fosters a sense of community and belonging.
Participating in church activities can also play a crucial role in preventing teenagers from becoming graffitists. Ramona Jones (2008) suggests that "teens should probably go to church and participate in some of the church activities such as singing in the choir and Bible study to help keep their minds occupied" (para. 1). Engaging in Bible study not only consumes their time but also encourages them to reflect on deeper spiritual and moral questions, which can be a powerful deterrent against the temptation to vandalize. Additionally, singing in the choir allows them to learn songs with meaningful and positive lyrics, such as "surely he taught us to love one another, his law is love and..." (Oh Holy Night). These uplifting messages, combined with the insights gained from Bible study, can inspire teenagers to respect and obey the law, thus discouraging them from engaging in graffiti. By involving teenagers in such activities, churches can provide a supportive environment that promotes positive values and behaviors.
