Human Relationships in Hills Like White Elephant and Indian Camp

Human relationship is defined as the relationship between two or group of people. For example, in Indian Camp Dr. Adam, his son and his brother go to Indian Camp for helping an American Indian woman who is in pain and cannot afford hospital for delivery of baby due to poverty. This shows the Human Relationship in Indian Camp as Dr. Adam goes to help the American women while he does not know the American Woman and her family. This essay will compare and contrast the human relationship in Hills Like White Elephant and Indian Camp. Both the stories are based on child that is in Hills Like White Elephant the American man convince his girlfriend for abortion while in Indian Camp the American women is in pain labor from two days and his husband do suicide before coming his baby to earth.

To initiate, with the comparison between both the stories as both the stories were written by the same writer Ernest Hemmingway. In “Hills Like White Elephant” as well as in “Indian Camp” the main character is male as well as female. Moreover, each and every women in both the stories is more stronger than man while dialogues in both the stories were told more by male perspective like in Hills Like White Elephant the American man tries to convince his girlfriend for having an operation and he also told to his girlfriend that everyone who had this operation live happily after having the operation. The American man does not tell the name of operation, but his girlfriend knows that he is talking about the Abortion and she tries to ignore him. For example, she says “Would you please please please please please please please please stop talking” (Mays 126). Later, the American man says that the final decision for having an operation is of her that if she wants to have a child or not while in Indian Camp Adam and his father as well as his uncle goes to Indian Camp in a boat which is located at the other side of lake to help an American Indian woman who has been in a pain labor from two days and her husband cut his throat with axe during the pain labor of his wife. So, this shows that in both the stories the father of baby draws back from their responsibilities and this also shows the bad human relationship between father and unborn baby.

The second comparison between both the stories is that both the stories are based on child. In Hills like White Elephant the father of unborn born baby wants to kill him in the mother worm while the mother of unborn baby does not want to kill him as mother and child is maternally bond to each other and their relationship and love towards each other is deeper like sea. On the other hand, in Indian Camp the injured father of unborn baby is unlucky that he even cannot able to see the face of his child because during the labor pain of his wife he cuts his throat with open razor in the upper bunk. For example, when Dr. Adam and his brother in the excitement go to the upper bunk and “Pulled back the blanket from the Indian head. His head came away wet and his throat had been cut from ear to ear”. As bond between father and child is not maternal bond but they are attached to each other by paternal bond and child love equally to both the parents but in Indian Camp the relationship between father and child is not strong as much as child relationship with their mother because the American husband do suicide before his baby comes to earth and his baby is also unlucky that he or she also cannot see the face of his or her father.

On the other hand, to begin with contrast between Hills Like White Elephant and Indian Camp, the first contrast is that the whole short story Indian Camp were happened in a train station. The train station was surrounded by the mountains and trees. The American man and his girlfriend waiting for a train, but train comes after forty minutes so, they go to beer bar near the station and ordered firstly two beers. After, sometime the American again ordered two more beers because it was a hot day as his girlfriend is pregnant and she drinks beer even his girlfriend knows that in pregnancy drinks are injuries to the health of baby and it may cause loss of baby that his boyfriend wants. His boyfriend wants “Abortion” of baby while in Indian Camp the situation is opposite to it. The whole story is based on the Birth of the child, the American Indian Woman is in labor pain from two days and unable to deliver her baby. So, Dr. Adam goes to Indian camp for cesarean of American Indian Woman. This shows the human relationship between people as Dr. Adam goes to Indian Camp which is located at the other of Michigan Lake for helping the American Woman. Dr. Adam goes to Indian Camp with his brother as his brother knows the American Indian people while Dr. Adam does not know them. This also shows the Human Relationship between rich people and poor people as well as educated and uneducated people.

The second contrast between both the stories is that in Hills like White Elephant the relationship between the American boy and Jig is that they were boyfriend and girlfriend so that’s why American boy wants Abortion because he thinks that if he had baby before marriage their will be lots of problems arises for them but the relationship between mother and child is same either mother is married or not while in Indian Camp the relationship between American Man and American Woman is that they were husband and wife. Due to the poverty, the American man were unable to afford hospital and can see his wife in a pain from two days. So, that’s why he cuts his throat with open razor and cannot think about his child because the relationship between husband and wife is like as fish and water because without water fish cannot survive and without fish water cannot remain clear and safe. So, the relationship between husband and wife is that without husband wife cannot live happily and without wife husband cannot live happily.

Human relationship plays an essential role in each and every field of human’s life. From the above discussion of the two stories, the conclusion is that understanding between two or more people plays an important role for better human relationship between people without better understanding it is very difficult to make good human relationship between people. For example, in Hills Like White Elephant if there is the good understanding between American boy and his girlfriend, they cannot face any problem and cannot debate on Abortion and live their life happily with each other. Moreover, the second factor which is responsible for good human relationship is Trust. If, people Trust each other and Help each other it makes the good human relationship between them. For example, Dr, Adam goes to Indian Camp for helping an American Woman to whom he cannot knows but his brother knows.
